Southeastern Regional’s Girls Basketball Teams Host Tri-County in the Last Game at the School’s Old Gym
Southeastern Regional’s Girls’ Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball teams hosted Tri-County in the season opener on Tuesday, marking the beginning of winter team competition and the end of the school’s original gym, built in 1968. Both schools achieved a victory; Southeastern Regional’s Junior Varsity team won 34 to 16 while Tri-County’s Varsity team scored 52 to 27.
At the conclusion of the games, participating Southeastern team members shared in cutting down the old nets and signing wall pads, giving the girls a chance to say goodbye to their old gym and reflect on it’s meaning in their high school years. “It’s kind of sad because we’re used to this gym, but we look forward to using the new gym next week” reflected Brielle Rivera of Brockton. “The new gym has bleachers on both sides, and is painted blue with the Hawks name. The locker rooms are also brand new. I look forward to volleyball season and seeing the reaction of visiting teams to the new gym.”
Luisa Pelissari of Stoughton said “As a senior, my memories were made here; the underclassmen will make future memories in the new gym. I’m excited about a new beginning.”
Coach James Campbell shared his team’s sentiments and added “I’m very excited to get my new season going at the new gym.”
Soon to be relocated in the new gym are a large collection of Southeastern Regional’s championship banners for achievements in wrestling, soccer, basketball, football, hockey, cross country, track, volleyball, golf, baseball, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and sportsmanship. In addition to these sports, the gym has been the site of annual events such as powder puff football games, the Harlem Super Stars basketball show, as well as all class assemblies and rallies. A ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the new gymnasium will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. State Representatives Jay Barrows and Geoff Diehl will offer a few brief remarks on behalf of the Southeastern Regional School District.
