DID YOU KNOW August 1, 1803 Oliver Ames bought Shovel Shop Pond, his first purchase in Easton. August 10, 1877 twenty men were digging out Shovel Shop Pond and laying a wall on the west side of the pond, so to make a pleasure ground for the Village.

He bought the pond in 1803 and in 1877 men dug the pond? What does this mean?

I think that in 1877, they were digging a border wall, which once they filled in behind it, probably reduced the size of the pond, but increased the recreational space. Is this the border right across from the Station? They damned up Ames-Long Pond in 1825 and Flyaway in 1845.

It means he had remarkable longevity especially for that era. Unless it was his heirs who commissioned the rennovation. Stuff of legends.

This section leaves us knowing even less and scratching our heads...
This purchase was the beginning of a legacy. How a brief explanation of what the original boundaries were and how this purchase led to the start of one of the largest industrial sucess stories of its time
