Matthews Looks Forward to New Role as OA Athletic Director

OA's future Athletic Director appeared before the Easton School Committee last week.

Oliver Ames Principal Wes Paul was at last Thursday's Easton School Committee meeting to introduce his new athletic director, Bill Matthews, who will begin at the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

Matthews, who is a former NFL and USFL linebacker, said he had already begun the process of meeting people, and he was excited to get started.

"I’m really looking forward to the opportunity," he said. "I’ve had the opportunity to meet some folks and start to begin the process."

Matthews said he hadn't considered applying for the position until he saw the position open.

Current OA AD Jim Von Euw announced his resignation earlier this year. His eight year reign as the AD will end after this school year.

"All of a sudden the wheels started to turn and I thought, here’s an opportunity to take my athletic background and really affect students," Matthews said.

After playing football professionally, Matthews entered the business world, eventually becoming the president of MailCoups, Inc. after 26 years in the industry.

"I think its very important for children to learn that there is life after sports," said school committee member Donna Abelli. "To see your success [in business] is wonderful."

Matthews said he hopes to focus on the educational aspects of athletics, making sure that all student-athletes at OA are learning while they play.

"My goal is really to make sure that’s a core part of what we’re doing here and working with the coaches," he said.

School Committee Chair Jane Martin said she hopes Matthews will reach out to the parents of students.

"It’s not just reaching the student athletes," she said. "Sometimes we need to reach out to their parents as well. Our parents need to be educated about teamwork and that it’s not just about winning."

@Bill Matthews - Perhaps you watched the Michigan State University vs. Notre Dame football game last night at MSU re: Bullough.

Let's be honest here, I enjoy Boston College. Go BC!
