OA Baseball Honors Seniors After Win over Pembroke

Seniors Jared Bloom, Chris Brady, lead Tigers during their 4-run second inning.

One day after the Oliver Ames softball team rewarded its seniors with a 16-1 win over Nauset, the baseball team followed suit on its senior day, defeating Pembroke 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon at

Much like the softball seniors did in their win Tuesday, the class of 2011 played a big role in Wednesday's triumph.

The seniors were also honored for their contributions for the program during the postgame festivities.

“It was great,” said OA senior co-captain Jared Bloom one of the team’s three Hockomock League all-stars along with junior pitchers Ryan O’Shea and Troy Whitty. “I’ve been playing with these seniors my whole life; and it’s going to be sad when it’s over. We still have a lot of baseball left to play, but it was great to recognize everyone’s contribution to the program.”

"It was nice way to honor the seniors," said OA head coach Leo Duggan. "It was a nice gesture for them to be rewarded for their dedication to the team."

Though Pembroke jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, OA made sure that the team, and its seniors, would come out on top.

In the bottom of the second, infielder Chris Brady drove an RBI double scoring O’Shea to tie the game at 1-1. A few batters later, Bloom drove in an RBI on a fielder’s choice to give the Tigers the lead for good. Junior catcher Matt Harding drove in the fourth OA run with an RBI triple, scoring Bloom from first.

After getting out of a first inning bases loaded jam with just one run, sophomore pitcher David MacKinnon settled down and gave the Tigers a solid performance in his first start of the year; allowing just three hits and two runs in five innings.

“We were in one of our six games in eight days stretch because of the rainouts, and this was David’s first start of the year,” Duggan said about his starter. “We knew David could be a good pitcher so we gave him the start today. He was a little shaky in the first inning, partly because Pembroke didn’t warm up…but he hung in there after the first inning and did a nice job.”

Fittingly enough, senior reliever Andrew Hetzel secured the OA win in two scoreless innings striking out three Pembroke batters in that span.

The Tigers, who will host the winner of the Rex-Kelley division tomorrow in the Hockomock Showcase at 3:30 p.m., improved their record to 13-4 on the season. Pembroke dropped to 8-13 in its last game of the spring.

No matter who claims the large division of the Hockomock League, Bloom and the Tigers are looking forward to the challenge tomorrow as the champions of the small division.

“I think we’ll be ready for whomever we get,” said Bloom, who doesn’t have a preference on which team he faces tomorrow. “We’ve seen everyone [from the other side of the division] at least once, and we’ll be able to prepare for whoever we get.”
