Oliver Ames Golf Wins Third Match in a Row
The Tigers defeated powerhouse Sharon Wednesday afternoon to improve to 3-2.
Wednesday afternoon, the Oliver Ames golf team likely proved that it is the real deal.
In their first home match of the season, the Tigers upset then-undefeated Sharon, 149-152 to take their third win in a row and improve to 3-2.
Sharon dropped to 5-1.
"It was our first home match and if we shoot like that we'll be in every match," coach Leo Duggan said.
OA had five golfers shoot in the 30s. Nick Carter, Sam Minsky and James Shlhoup all finished the day with a 37. Josh Gurman finished the day with a 38 and Kyle Mathieson finished with a 39.
The win may be a coming out party for the young Tigers, who finished last year 8-7.
"Last year, we lost captain Bobby O’Donnell who was a four year starter for us," Duggan said. " But, a lot of these guys played a lot of golf last year."
Leading the way this year will be junior captain Nick Carter and senior captain Josh Gurman. The Tigers will also get contributions from senior Brian Moroney and a long list of sophomores.
As a freshman last year, Sam Minsky was OA's third leading scorer and he has already been contributing as one of the Tigers' top players this year as a sophomore. Sophomores JP Abela, Jake Becker, Kyle Mathieson, James Shlhoup and Brendan Flynn are all looking to contribute as well.
"Last year, we had a winning record, so we should be competitive with most of the teams," Duggan said, pointing out that OA's first two losses were by five strokes and three strokes.
After one home match, the Tigers take to the road again in matches against Stoughton, Canton and Sharon.
The Tigers should be confident after Wednesday's match showed the young team can compete with anyone in the league.
"Sharon is the most talented team in the league so it’s good to see how we stack up," Duggan said.
