On The Fringe – Peering Over The Edge
Columnist Bob Havey has always been intrigued with a parallel universe.
This column is interactive for the internet. Have some fun as you explore the creative, if not bizarre mind of this columnist. Be sure to click on the links or you won't get it. Of course, you may not get it anyway, but if you check out the links at least you'll have a fighting chance. Yeah – good luck with that!
Have you seen this TV show – Fringe? I love it! I was a big fan of the show, X-Files, and Fringe is in the same genre.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Fringe, the main premise of the show is the existence of a parallel universe; a world that is an exact mirror image of the world in which we live.
The concept of a parallel universe intrigues me. I sometimes feel like I bounce back and forth between two distinctly different worlds. There's Humorous Bob, Serious Bob and Angry Bob. There's also Sponge Bob, Jim Bob, Billy Bob and Bobolink. Well, I guess that's more than two, but you get my drift, right? You don't? Listen – I'm doing the best I can – really! You're just going to have to pay closer attention and don't forget – click on the links! Good grief! How many times do I have to tell you? This is good stuff. "Trust me," said the spider to the fly.
Those of you with excellent taste, who have followed this column since its inception, will recall that my inaugural offering to Patch.com spoke of my relationship, and dependency upon, my Muse. As fate would have it, my Muse spent the Thanksgiving holiday with her family in….in….um, actually I don't know where the heck she spent her Thanksgiving holiday. I'm not convinced that conniving little sprite has a family. She was supposed to have been back before I started writing this column, but you know how Muses can be, right? You don't? Well, let me tell you; they're not all that dependable.
Now don't get me wrong. I love my Muse. I couldn't get along without her. Not one word would flow from my pen, or actually, from my keyboard, without her. In a life and death situation; she's the one I'd want next to me in the foxhole. If it were third and long from deep in my own territory; I'd want her at quarterback. She always comes through, but the waiting is maddening. Last minute Charlie – that's what she is. She drives me absolutely crazy!
The point is this. Yes, there is a point. Give me a minute will you? I have a column to write and I'm on my own here; totally Muse-less. If you think this is so easy - you try it!
Listen; if you don't mind too much, I need some more coffee. Even if you do mind, I'm getting it anyway. You do realize that I'm talking to you and you're not actually here, don't you? You're reading this a few days after it has been written, so your objections to my getting another cup of coffee are falling upon deaf ears. I will have already had my coffee way before you read this. I've actually created you – the person I'm speaking to right now – and I have no idea who you are. But you're there now – aren't you? So, how obscure is that concept? I'm hoping you'll wake up in the middle of the night thinking about this. It would give me great pleasure to think that, because of me, you'll be sleepy and lethargic for the next few days – you know – as a punishment for trying to deny me another cup of coffee. Mess with me will you? Ain't gonna happen! This is my fantasy world and you're only here because I created you.
So anyway, I'm off to get my coffee. Just relax, Listen to this and I'll be back in about ten minutes. Oh – and turn your speakers up. This is classic stuff! And listen to the whole song. I'll know if you cheated.
I'm back. Nice huh? Jimi Hendrix would have turned sixty-eight years old today – as of this writing - Nov. 27– hard to believe. He was lost to us much too soon, along with Janis Joplin – Jim Morrison – a few others; victims of the excesses of the sixties.
Those were amazing times – extreme times; times of polar opposites colliding; times of extreme turmoil – war; extreme peace - love; times of extreme self-indulgence; times of caring for one another, involvement – activism; opposing forces in a battle to shape history; to shape the world. I think we had a good idea back then – a solid concept. The world needed change, but I think we really messed it up. We knew there was a problem; we just didn't necessarily always pursue the proper solution. Live and learn I guess. That was a great time to be alive.
This has been kind of fun, don't you think? At the very least it's been different. I can be dangerous without my Muse to guide me; a little crazy. But now that I think about it; that pesky Muse must have been here all the time because I got through this - I finished. Sneaky Muse!
I wanted to mention a few things that you should be aware of; some opportunities for fun and some areas in which you can help others to have a happier holiday season - to lend a hand to those who have come upon some bumps in the road and need some support.
First, coming up this weekend, the Easton Lions will hold their Annual Holiday Festival on Saturday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Rockery, 1 Main Street, North Easton. This is always a lot of fun, especially for the kids. Stop by, visit the many crafters who are set up inside Oakes Ames Memorial Hall and pick up a few Christmas gifts, while helping support the great work of the Lions Club.
Speaking of Oakes Ames Memorial Hall - that's the place to be on Sunday, Dec. 5 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the 11th Annual Holiday Breakfast hosted by the Easton Women of Today. Gather up some friends and family members; crank up your appetites and head on over for some great food, music, raffles and a lot of good old-fashioned fun. This is a great way to kick off the holiday season, while helping the hard-working ladies of EWOT support the community through their Scholarship & Family in Need Funds. For more information click here.
That's it for this week. I hope you had some fun – and a few laughs. I'm going to get some more coffee, and there's nothing you can do about it!

OMG! I've paid big money and not been entertained like this. How do you mix humor, insight, thoughtfulness and total craziness and make it work? LOVE Janis Joplin BTW. Thank you for the memories.

I've had several people ask me if there was some point that they had missed in this column; something they had overlooked. They 'didn't get it'.
There is no 'deeper meaning' here. No great philosophical truth dwelling between the lines.
What you may have missed is....
Creativity
Fun
Craziness
Entertainment for entertainment's sake.
That's it. That's the whole enchilada.
I'll try to take it easy on you next week - I promise!
