Question of the Day: College Admissions and the Internet
Do you think college admission officers should be searching for applicants on the internet?

A recent report released by Kaplan said that many of Oliver Ames' seniors should be more careful about what they post online.
The report said 24 percent of college admission officers find high school applicants on facebook while 20 percent google the applicant's name.
The trend is on the rise, Kaplan said. In 2008, only 10 percent of college admission officers checked applicants facebook pages.

As a private college counselor, I don't think that many colleges are looking at the internet to find students, but I do believe they check out random facebook pages to see what applicants are doing. It only makes good sense for students to post things on facebook that they would not object to anyone seeing, including a college admissions committee. The same goes for a student's email. Get one that you use for college correspondence only and make sure it is straightforward and apopropriate.
