Yesterday was my first visit this year to an Oliver Ames football game, won convincingly by an inspired OA team. The football team deserves much credit, but the public address announcer should be ashamed of himself and embarassed as a representative of the High School and the Town of Easton. I don't know if the same individual announces yesterday's game all OA home games. Perhaps he is considered a folk hero, but as a visitor I was outraged and insulted at his "act". He consistently used "us" and "we" when referring to OA, and praised an OA player on almost every play. He rarely mentioned a Sharon player's name and when he did, mispronounced his name and identified him with the wrong number. His partiality was laughable, unsportsmanship-like, and his announcing was as unprofessional as I have ever heard. He made Johhny Most sound like Henry Kissinger. Did he realize that there were Sharon fans sitting a few feet below him? Did he realize that when he said "uh oh, watch out for the play-action pass" he was influencing the play on the field? Did he know that when he was joking and talking with others in the booth, that the entire stadium could hear him?
A public address announcer should tell the fans the basics, nothing more. Why an OA High School official didn't acknowledge the travesty and tell him to knock it off is beyond me. He ruined an otherwise nice day. I'm sure he enjoyed his turkey, but he a left a bad taste in the mouths of many.
