Verizon Cable Cut at Easton Industrial Park

Striking workers arrive to picket as managers fix what is perceived to be an act of "sabotage."

Easton Police are investigating an incident in Easton Industrial Park in which a five foot section of copper cable was cut from a telephone pole, Easton Police Chief said.

The incident has caused cable outages for businesses and residences in the area, Krajcik said.

The cut cable is one of over 10 "sabotage" instances reported along the East Coast since Verizon wireline employees went on strike last weekend, including two in Tewksbury.

Verizon spokesman Phil Santoro said that prior to the strike, no instances of "sabotage" had been reported. The cut cable sent Verizon managers to the scene, who are filling in to cover workload.

Picketers also arrived on the scene donning sandwich boards reading "I.B.E.W. (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Local 2322 On Strike Against Verizon."

In a statement, Verizon Chief Security Officer Mike Mason reprimanded the acts of "sabotage." He offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution of "individuals that intentionally damage Verizon cables or facilities or cause or attempt to cause physical injury to any Verizon employee or contractor."

“These acts of sabotage are reprehensible,” he said. “In addition to inconveniencing our customers, these deliberate disruptions of our network have affected hospitals, paramedics, fire fighters, law enforcement and other first responders. Verizon is working closely with local authorities to investigate these sabotage incidents, and identify and prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.  And we will not hesitate to terminate any employee who may be involved in these acts."

Santoro said contract negotiations came to a standstill over an agreement on health-care. He said that since the union went on strike last weekend, though, both sides began to talk again.

As for Easton residents without cable, Santoro said Verizon managers hope to have the situation resolved soon.

"We have a crew on site today," he said. "We hope to have everyone restored by tonight or tomorrow at the least."
