Warren Up in Polls, Herald Endorses Brown: Who's Winning?
With Warren holding a small lead in the polls, and Brown getting a key endorsement from the Boston Herald, who do you think has the momentum coming into the final days of the election?
Democrat Elizabeth Warren is up by five points over incumbent Republican Scott Brown in the latest WBUR/MassINC poll of the Massachusetts senate race. That's a near-total reversal of the BUR poll last month, which had Brown up by four on Oct. 9.
In fact, Warren has been trending upwards in most recent polling. The New York Times' FiveThirtyEight blog has Warren up by four in an average of recent polls. The blog, which uses advanced statistical modeling akin to baseball sabermetrics (think Moneyball) gives Warren an 89 percent chance of winning the election.
But Brown's got some significant energy on his side as well. He's been barnstorming the state with political luminaries like Senator John McCain and today won the Boston herald's endorsement.
The last debate between Brown and Warren will be held a week before election day, Tuesday, Oct. 30.
So what do you think? Who has the momentum coming into the final two weeks of the election? Do the polls in liberal-leaning Massachusetts mean anything to you, or will Brown's high-profile support sway the electorate? Give us your prediction in the comments below!

Warren has the momentum. Probably because she is talking issues, and he is talking about her heritage and who she took as clients as a private attorney.

Warren is working hard, matter of fact I just received a call from her that I allowed to go on the answering machine. She promised she'd call tomorrow. I'm voting for Scott Brown, so I won't waste her time.
Brown took MA with 52% of the vote to Coakley's 47%. Will the people who voted for Brown in 2010, suddenly decide Warren is the better candidate? I don't think so. But, if she continues to beat the bushes to flush out new voters, she just might win. I hope not, but it is a reality.

Massachusetts will vote for Obama and Warren and overwhelmingly so in communities that respect women as equals and where women recognize the importance of women participating in decision-making. The U.S. is 80th among 190 nations in the percent of national legislative seats held by women, ironically falling behind countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia. When we have equal representation, we will have equal pay for equal work.

Warren lives in "Academia", where the world is not real, rather silly ideas. These academic ideas are proving they don't work in the real world. Ideas are fine in the classroom. Real solutions are much more harder to achieve. Ms Warren has "ideas" not solutions. Her experience is truly lacking. Taxing the rich more will not help. That is a failing idea. What MAY work is a FLAT or FAIR tax where everyone has the same deductions, no loopholes and pays the same rate. Think of this: 1st $50K tax free for all, no other deductions or loopholes. Person makes $75K pays tax on $25K. Person makes $1Million, pays tax on $950K. Both pay 10% tax rate. 1st pays tax of $2,500. Millionare pays tax of $95K. Thats a plan, thats a solution, NOT an idea. Anyway, it would never pass because CONGRESS makes the laws, there is no way in H,,, that they will ever vote for themselves to have to pay more in taxes. They'll probably do the reverse, so the Middle Class will pay more. Get real. NONE OF THEM give a Rat's A.. about you or me. Its all about THEM!!! What they can do for themselves!!!

"Taxing the rich more will not help. That is a failing idea. "
And yet it has worked so well in the past. Taxes were higher under Clinton, and the economy was booming. Taxes on the wealthy were almost 90% during the 1950s. I'm not saying we should do that again; the Clinton-era tax rates would probably be good.
Fiscal Conservative

Wendy: In the 50's the tax rate on the wealthy was , indeed, 90%. Yet, none of those people paid anywhere near that rate because of the deductions and loopholes Congress created for the wealthy. Remember, Congressional members are beholding to Special Interests, they will not do anything to cut off the financial support from them. Therefore, they create all these wonderful loopholes for the superwealthy, stuff you and I cannot take advantage of. To think that a plan to raise the tax rate on the wealth will work is very naive because HIDDEN in a law will be new benefits that they will use while you and I will be hit with more taxes to pay. Remember, Congressional members are in the 1%. Question: Would you raise your tax rate? Answer: NO!!! Do you think that Congress will raise the tax rate on themselves? A louder NO!!!. Get real, we are nothing but PAWNS for them. Congress uses and abuses WE, THE PEOPLE. Their attitude is WE WORK FOR THEM, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND
Wendy Wagner

Frank: "Yet, none of those people paid anywhere near that rate because of the deductions and loopholes Congress created for the wealthy. " Yes, the effective tax rate was somewhere around 50-60%. And deductions and loopholes still exist. And it doesn't change the fact that the economy was booming while these tax rates existed.
Again, I would be happy with Clinton-era tax rates, which are among the lowest in history, but slightly higher than they are now. Why would you have a problem with that?

Frankly (no pun intended), your claim about “Academia” is not supported by the facts. Elizabeth Warren is widely recognized as one of the leaders of the empirical school of legal research, wherein what happens in the real world, particularly in her case as regards bankruptcy, is put to the forefront. She’s authored articles and books on bankruptcy that looked at what people were affected. These made quite a splash when published, and her studies radically changed the conventional wisdom on who is affected by bankruptcy. That’s not “Ivory Tower” - that’s a level of achievement, with practical implications, that most of us cannot claim. Does Scott Brown have some impressive personal characteristics? His level of achievement would argue yes - but one of his low points is encouraging the anti-academic rhetoric of which your post is an unfortunate example. Not one fact there. Well, here’s a fact for you - despite the barncoat and pickup, Scott Brown graduated from Tufts and BC Law - there, I’ve exposed the Senator as being not only educated, but highly educated. Here’s another fact for you - being a Professor at Harvard is a major achievement and something to be proud of - your rather silly ideas on the subject notwithstanding.

She is one of these people who believe that she can "level the playing field for ALL through Taxing those that have, and giving to those that don't have". This has never worked, especially in a large society as ours. We are far too diverse with far too many problems. This idea in the Progressive Socialist Democrats ( or whatever you call them) won't work in our society. Do the R's have a workable solution? I don't think so, I don't think anyone does. All I know is I'm not content giving what I worked hard for, to some one who is physically & emotionally healthy, yet chooses to sit on their duffs, abusing the system. Yes, you'll say not all are like that. True, it's only those who do I resent. The #'s are increasing every day. Govt is the least efficient method of "redistributing" wealth. Private charities can do a much better job. I would much rather be able to pick and choose the charities my HARD EARNED $$$ goes to. That way I may have more control of how it is utilized. This "Academia", of knowing better than the public, is crap. Our society is better educated than those in power give us credit. I, for one, can think as well as a "Harvard Professor". My areas of expertise may not be in her chosen field, but, I'll guarantte there are many things she is not as competent in as you or I. We all have strengths & weaknesses. For the most part, politicians biggest weakness (both sides), is the ability to tell the TRUTH consistently.

Frank: Thank you for your honest response. I am cynical, I admit it. Since an early age I've fought hard to get what I have, little or as much as it may be. I firmly believe that every healthy person should have a "stake" in this, once great, country of ours. Giving so many entitlements (both sides do this) to those who do NOT deserve them, weakens this great country. I have no problem with helping those truly in need, but, to we have to help those that "want" stuff without contributing. Something has to be done to bring control to this problem. Those currently running for office are not the answer, sorry to say. I wish I had the answer, but, unlike those running, I can not lie. I don't have the answer. It may be far too complicated for anyone. Remember, this country was founded with 13 states and a population far smaller. I don't think the Founders ever could have imagined how this country has grown. They called it the "Great Experiment". Many didn't think it would survive this long. Maybe, just maybe, the "Experiment" has grown to the point where it is now falling. Every other culture has, do we really think that, over time, ours won't also? History does repeat itself, future generations will hold the answer, not ours. One of us may have an solution, I doubt it, though. My cynicism is showing isn't it?

The state of Ma needs to keep a conservative in the senate for all us independents and conservatives in Ma to be our voice! I hope Scott wins! This state is overwhelmingly democrat and needs more balance! While Scott has voted with his party’s majority, he has also voted in favor of the Democratic financial reform bill and against the 2012 budget passed by House Republicans. He also did not join his colleagues in seeking to eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Maybe Carol Bragg needs to get her facts straight. So to say that he does not support women is just not true. Let us not forget that he lives with 3 women! Its just scare tactics used by the Warren campaign. He was also one of four in his party to vote against a medicare bill that would reshape medicare. i may not always agree with Scott but I would rather vote for someone I agree with 50% of the time than none at all.

Living with women is not a qualification. The Founding Fathers all lived with women and had African Americans as part of their households. But they regarded slaves as 3/5 of a person and denied both women and blacks the right to vote, landownership rights and a whole lot more. Massachusetts is overwhelmingly male in elected leadership positions and Congress is also overwhelmingly male. Whether they are Republicans or Democrats, liberal or conservative, women elected officials are role models for girls. Women bring a different set of skills to the table. After the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles, one of the major recommendations of the Christopher Commission was that the LAPD hire more women. BTW, I never said that Scott Brown doesn't support women, nor do I reject him as a candidate. I look at the bigger picture and say the nation desperately needs more women in the Senate and Massachusetts now has the opportunity to help make that happen.

Brown will win by at least 51% because people are not taking into account the Absentee Ballots that are coming in by the thousands and voting for Senator Brown.
Senator Brown will win again and it has been a tough fight. We don't need a hypocrite like Warren as Senator who lives in a ivory tower and those millionaires she's always putting down, lol! well she's one of those millionaires. Warren receives $350,000 a year from Harvard University for teaching one single Law Class. Now does anybody in their right mind believe that she's for the little guy and is a fair person who is not greedy. Warren is disgusting she even wants to give Amnesty to Illegal Immigrants and let them just stay in Massachusetts taking jobs, housing, medical, welfare, free legal and Interpreter services all on the taxpayers' dime while millions of US Citizens and Legal Residents are out of work. You see a person like Warren doesn't have to worry about finding a job, medical care, housing or Legal Services but its ok for her to stick it to hard working Americans and Legal Residents. She is nothing but a two faced hypocrite.

So people who make a lot of money can’t be for the little guy? Or is it people who just earn a high salary? Have you seen the Brown family’s earnings? What about Romney’s tax returns? To paraphrase one of the Presidential candidates, what have you got against success? Warren is at the pinnacle of her profession, earning what her peers earn at the nation’s top law school. She certainly could make a lot more as a practicing attorney - in fact, isn’t one of Brown’s attack lines about how much she made for this particular case or that particular case? And this anti-academia, anti-intellectual drivel is frankly disgusting...

I have to agree with Frank on this one. Warren earns what she earns and that should not be a downside or a shortfall. If someone is willing to pay her that kind of money because she is good at her profession then good for her.
Now, I am Supporting Senator Brown and I do believe he has the best interest of his constituents in mind when he casts a vote or supports a bill. He has military experience, political experience, and he is an accomplished contract attorney. He understands the people of MA and votes against his own party lines, 40% of the time, when need arises. Will Warren ever vote against the Democrats platform? I don't believe she will. I think she is going to fall in line with those of her party regardless of her constituents needs. She has no experience representing this state, or any other, and has never served in the Military.

Steve, I’m not one of those who believe that near 50% of the people (i.e., those who are voting for Brown or those who are voting for Warren) are loony, immoral, ignorant and/or stupid. Your thoughtful comments remind me of that. IMHO, I find Brown to be disingenuous at best - although I know you have plenty of ammunition to make the same claim on the other side. The fact that he is a graduate of Tufts and BC Law should be facts of pride and trumpeted, but it’s hardly mentioned; instead, somehow the fact that Elizabeth Warren is Professor Warren is implied to be a big negative. In my mind, the fact that Brown votes for legislation addressing violence against women is not something he should get credit for; and the fact that he voted for the Blunt amendment, which allows ANY insurer or employer to not offer coverage because of their moral beliefs and is NOT just about religious beliefs, severely undercuts his “bipartisan” claim. Conversely, I think Warren’s biography suggests very strongly that she will vote her convictions when it matters. I also think that if Brown is in the majority he will be hard-pressed to go across the grain. I do not expect him to be in the next edition of Profiles in Courage...So we both look at the same information and come up with different conclusions.

Scott Brown was a part-time real estate lawyer and is a part-time member of the National Guard. He is NOT an "accomplished contract lawyer". The Guard experience at one weekend per month and two weeks per year times thirty years amounts to a total of 3.12 years. So add that to the Obama-accumulated DEBT of nearly $6 Trillion for the past 4-Obama years in office, and top it off with the $16+ Trillion cherry-debt. That's quite a financial "ride" the liberal democrats have had. Enough is enough.

I can't imagine light-weight Romney as a foreign policy strategist dealing with this. His experience is limited to earning profits, not dealing with outlaws.

The IP-Intellectual Property theft occurred "on his watch" - or haven't you noticed. Where are your QBA skills? Quantitative Business Analysis skills.
Obama had 4 years, we've seen enough. Vote Romney/Ryan 2012. Scott Brown.

Just saw this - busy redistributing candy last night. Kind of an odd stretch to make your point. News flash: Scott Brown - attorney. As a matter of fact, on some of the other discussions going on, when someone questions why the Senator is not on duty with his Maryland National Guard Unit, the chorus of answers is that he is a LAWYER, and wouldn’t serve that type of duty. (Which begs the question, so how do you call what he does “military experience”?) Now, if I stipulate to your assertion that being an attorney is not "real life experience", do I want to support a lawyer who has done ground-breaking research that affects policy, or the guy who did my real estate closing? This “real life experience” thing is a construct for people too lazy to fashion a rational argument. We all work, send kids to school, pay bills - and for most of us it is more or less a challenge.

Still no answers I see from any of you on the DEBT, and although @Frank DelVecchio has joined in the chorus group of your followers, you don't have the well educated fooled. Nor do you have the money to follow through with your far left leaning liberal democrat ideas. $16+ Trillion in Debt; nearly $6 Trillion from the 4-Obama years alone, and expected to increase to over $20 Trillion if Obama, and I do mean if, he were re-elected. @Sinclair - I have been continually less and less impressed, with your overall lack of understanding on business related issues, and the country as a whole. The subject matter was theft of intellectual property, not the opportunity for you to show off your newly acquired business vocabulary.
Perhaps you were born yesterday; therefore I'll give you a little "IP" history. I saw first hand the theft of intellectual property when Bush-the-Greater was president, yet my employer didn't blame Bush for Russia's misdeeds. Our engineers inscribed at a microscopic level, "when you care enough to steal from the very best" on our semiconductors. Russian was doing reverse engineering and would have read that inscription. Of course we knew that they knew, and they knew that we knew. I can tell it spooked them as to whether they were analyzing legitimate technology on certain chips.

I have no opinion, at least one that I would share, about what Obama "has done" in four years. However, Mr. Indiana does bring up an interesting point. Should our presidents, whether they are Republican or Democratic, be worrying about running for a second term rather than just running a nation in the current term? Would it be better if our presidents only served one term (maybe a slightly longer term than the current one) and then that was it?

The only reason we had two terms was implied by the choice George Washington made early but it was republicans who feared a repeat of what FDR did when the people wanted him to serve as long as he could........so we got the 22nd amendment......people who make the "one term" question if dem or republican ignore the choice only people should make......real issue is Electoral college and life time appointments for SCOTUS - those are the real issues a hand. Our form of government when its not be obstructed as currently blunts the need to restrict terms - lifetime appoints bring on complicit / corrupt behavior (see Scalia, Antonin) as an example

ENOUGH, ALREADY!!!! Can we just relax until this election is over? 5 days of peace and quiet would be nice because as soon as the election is over, the winners will be "gloating" and the losers will be saying how unfair the election was. The will be no good winners or losers. Those days are long gone!!! All we have now are spiteful people in office. I don't see any major "breakthroughs" no matter who wins the election. The real losers are Main St America, you & I. These politicians will continue to dig their heels in along party lines. The logjam in politics will be the same. Deficit spending will rise, you & I will be able to do nothing about it either. Maybe, just maybe this country has become so large and diverse that it truly is impossible to govern in any sense that would benefit us. I'm just sick of the hate, spite, in fighting. Let's try something new.....civility towards other's opinions. They have the same right as you or I to speak their minds. Listen to them, they can't be all wrong and we can't always be correct. @Darren Major and @ Sinclair, actually - you are both incorrect. Try contacting the local principals office at OA-Oliver Ames High School-Wes Paul, as there is a proposed "Young Entrepreneur's Academy" -at OA. Chat further with principal Wes Paul, or call/email him. That type of program, an Entrerpreneur's program...benefits people like myself...CEO/President of my own software company; patent holder no.:5,759,118. Look for the archived article or contact the editor at The Easton Journal. There are other Easton area patent holders, besides myself.....who have spoken up for the program and/or written letters of support. Andrea Martin is one Easton resident who also wrote a letter to the editor in support of such an idea; read her back-dated letter as well. She too mentions she is a patent holder. @Frank Delvecchio - I would be pleased to clarify. The blogger above @Darren Major seems to think that I am a "legend in their own minds" -that particular comment, I do believe he was sending my way. Then he went on to recommend taking your advice, to ignore someone/a poster/blogger like myself.
There is a proposed "Young Entrepreneur's Academy" at OA-Oliver Ames High School. Contact Wes Paul, Principal....if interested further. The back-dated article I referenced above to @Darren Major and @Sinclair, is the following archived article: the copy I have is from: The Brockton Enterprise entitled: "Encourage Ideas of Young People" by Andrea Martin; Letters to the Editor; Opinion Section of the Brockton Enterprise, on Monday, February 11, 2008; pg.A-7. Other area newspapers may have also published the story, but that is where I read it/retain a copy of her letter. I recently emailed it along to Wes Paul and others at the Easton Public Schools; to include: Dr. Michael Green; Cathy MacLeod; Chris Getchell and a few others interested in the program. Andrea Martin's letter also references a February 5, 2008 article. Entrepreneurial, as I've indicated.
If you go back and read/request archived articles in The Easton Buzz newspaper; The Mansfield Buzz; The Norton Buzz; you will find a Letter to the Editor that I wrote "floating" the idea of a TWLC-Tiger Woods Learning Center, for the property alongside The TPC of Norton at Boston golf course....years ago.

Hence why I would return back to OA, my alma mater....to help create a brand new, entrepreneurial based program for others, like me....who are entrepreneurial, creative. It is a hobby, all of this.
And yes, I am an Invitational Guest Speaker at the college level.
Let me ask a few of you this, in the areas and communities where you live and work, would a program like this, as proposed in Easton at OA-Oliver Ames High School, be of interest to you? Would it benefit you? Would your children and grandchildren have an interest in a program like this? Where terms like: Venture Capital are introduced, Seed Money, Angel Investors?
If you are not familiar with the terms, please take the time to read/research.

So it’s coming from both sides, and not always directed effectively. If you’re trying to make some vague and obscure point that Warren is spending too much, and that implies something bad, Brown is equally culpable. Maybe this is what he means when he says he’s bipartisan.

Chheez, Just got ANOTHER Scott Brown flyer - “Elizabeth Warren wants to increase spending by $1 trillion to emulate China”. How can this be characterized as anything other than baloney (in keeping with Patch guidelines here)? Honest question - if you have a reasonable point of contention - be it government spending priorities or national debt or whatever - why not make your point, rather than say your opponent wants to “emulate China”? Stupid, stupid, stupid stuff. It’s all inane stuff - and that’s the best of it...Sad.

Frank, I think the emulate China message was taken directly from Warren's TV commercials that began airing the first weekend of the olympics. The one's that stated how much more China was investing in "infastructure" and admonishing us that "We can do better!" It was the ad showing the Construction site in China. I thought it was an awful ad and was surprised it ran as long as it did. But, if you're wondering where Brown got the message from it was from Warren's own commercial.

If the Bielat name sounds familiar - then you really have too much time on your hands...He’s running against that moonbat rich kid Joe Kennedy.
Anyway, the nerve of both Baker and Bielat, trying to get out the vote at DINNER TIME. It’s as if Bielat has spent months of hard work trying to get his message across, and actually wants to try to win. I am aghast.
For the record, I am not voting for Sean Bielat, a decision made long before his campaign became desperate. But I’m not going to complain about the man ruining my dinner. I give him credit for fighting on.

ANOTHER Bielat robocall - this one takes the interesting tack of complaining that Kennedy is not taking questions from the press and is staying tightly scripted - interesting complaint from someone whose Presidential standard bearer has been following the same route for the last two weeks and whose Senatorial candidate refused to participate in a final debate. Not judging those tactics here, just pointing out the apparent inconsistency. Call consists of a number of different “quotes” from different people. My favorite - “Do we want a Marine or a chicken?" Of the 5 robocalls I have received from Bielat, I would say two were positive, upbeat, and professional. The others, especially this last one, I would characterize as juvenile and reeking of desperation. IMHO, unless Bielat pulls off a miracle here, he’s pretty much history when this is done.

Janet, your short memory with the "days of old" regarding Health insurance is that many were unable to attain it unless they worked for a large corporation. In the very least, ObamaCare has moved to shake up not only the Insurer's, but also the providers. Ten years ago I couldn't find a PCP who would accept cash payments for uninsured, now they have formed a niche market even though I can also now purchase insurance from multiple sources. Another monster improvement is that I can not be denied to to prior conditions. I can go on and on, but simply put, it is not as simplistic as "co-payments".
