About this column:
If you have a letter you would like to submit to the editor, please email Pat Maguire at Patrick.Maguire@Patch.comTo the Editor: I am writing to enthusiastically support Dorothy Fulginiti (Dottie) in her bid for a seat on the Easton Board of Selectmen. My first opportunity to know Dottie came several years ago as we patiently waited for our young daughters to finish their dance lessons in the basement of Miss Eileen’s house on Bay Road—a very low budget and homey place to introduce our children to tap, ballet, and jazz. It has always amazed me what you can learn about a person in such tight quarters. As we waited for our daughters, with other children in tow, I learned quite a bit. There were many …
Letter to the Editor: A few years ago it appeared that the Turner Brothers would have control of the Shovel Shops and build 180 units totally out of character with the area. I then started hearing about something called 40B and someone named Dottie Fulginiti. Knew nothing about either one, researched the proposal from the Turner's and started to read Dottie's site, responsiblegrowthforeaston.org. What a turnaround for me. Dottie basically created a space to educate all of us on what a 40B would mean for us and the impact it would create. She did all of this research on her own and shared this…
To the Editor: I am writing in support of Dottie Fulginiti and Dan Smith, candidates for Easton’s Board of Selectmen in the upcoming election on April 30th. Both Dottie and Dan have made outstanding and consistent contributions to our community. Dottie was an active participant in the rescue and preservation of the Shovel Shop. Moreover, she created a website, responsiblegrowthforeaston.com, to keep the public informed. She worked diligently with others to reform the state’s 40B housing law to return planning and zoning control to the towns. As an active member of the Easton Lions Club and …
To the Editor: I write in support of Dan Smith as Selectman of the Town of Easton. As a co-member of the Easton Planning Board I have gotten to know and appreciate the energy and enthusiasm that Dan brings to the board. Dan Smith is a candidate who will balance the needs of the community and local business. Dan’s work on the Planning Board showcases his expertise as an entrepreneur, a leader in sustainable energy and an advocate for local business. The efforts and skill that Dan has brought to the complex issues of land use and planning, such as his leadership for the proposed solar field at …
To the Editor: I understand that the term “Fiscal Responsibility” may not be the sexiest of buzzwords. Along with “transparency”, “debt ceiling”, and “accountability”, Americans have nearly perfected the art of tuning out these political platitudes. Not unlike our kids or grandkids when we tell them to clean their rooms or put the dishes in the sink, if we as adults don’t lead by example and make them follow through, they will tune out our empty words and continue their bad behavior. With no actionable solutions associated with the clichés, Americans know that the words alone are …
To the Editor, As a resident of North Easton I am writing this letter to endorse Dottie Fulginiti for a position on the Board of Selectmen for the town of Easton. I have had the pleasure of knowing Dottie for several years as she was recommended to me to help build a website for the Charity Guild of Brockton. The Charity Guild is a food pantry and thrift store in Brockton. Upon my first meeting with her I knew immediately that she was a woman of integrity and most knowledgeable in the world of technology. We spent several hours together working on this project. When it was finished, we knew …
Dear Editor: I am privileged to write to you in order to express my support for Dan Smith as selectman of the town of Easton. I have known Dan through working with him in a relationship between my company, Retroficiency, and Siemens, where Dan is an Energy Executive. Dan Smith will bring business acumen, integrity, and social responsibility to the selectman position. I met Dan through our children attending the same preschool, Creative World in Easton. We found that we had moved to Easton for similar reasons, one of which is the strength of the school system and the town’s commitment to a …
To the Editor: Making a difference in a community is one of the true benefits of volunteering. To quote Martin Luther King, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve”. I became involved in HUGS II (Help Us Get Safe) of Easton in 1999, when I was in the midst of my doctoral work. My interest was (and still is) advocacy and helping those who may not be able to speak or do for themselves. Being a nurse, advocacy is central to the role. As part of my coursework, I chose to do a concept analysis on advocacy. I attended a HUGS II meeting at OAHS one winter evening to view advocacy in …
To the Editor: I have known Claire Cronin and her family for over 35 years and I am pleased to give her my full support in the Nov. 6 Election.Claire will make an outstanding State Representative and the residents of the 11th Plymouth District will find her to be thoughtful, selfless, caring, articulate, sensitive to the needs of all constituents, and an extremely hard worker. She will listen to your concerns and questions and work hard to find solutions. Claire will focus on local and state issues and initiatives and will always do what is best for the citizens of Massachusetts. I am most …
To the Editor: The Easton Democratic Town Committee has endorsed the following candidates who will appear on the ballot on November 6, 2012. In the race for the 3rd Bristol District of the State House of Representatives, the Committee has endorsed Sherry Costa Hanlon a current member of the Taunton City Council. The 3rd Bristol District represents Precinct 6 in the Town of Easton. In the race for the 11th Plymouth District of the State House of Representatives, the Committee has endorsed Claire Cronin, a mediation attorney and resident of Easton. The 11th Plymouth District represents …
Dear Editor, I write this letter today in support of a person whom I feel would be an asset to Easton, Mark Linde. Serving as an elected official myself I can relate to the necessary experience it takes both in life and public service for an individual to be Easton's next State Representative. Mark has leadership experience, as the current Chairman of the Southeastern School Committee which serves Easton. As an elected official himself, Mark knows how to be fiscally responsible by carefully overseeing budgets at Southeastern for the past three and a half years. The assessments to Easton have …
I have had the privilege of working on several democratic campaigns in the Town of Easton over the past few months. Recently, I have realized, as I speak with voters in town, that the Commonwealth has not done a very good job of communicating the fact that there is a Primary Election on Thursday, September 6, 2012. In fact, there are three very significant and competitive races in the Democratic Primary that may well impact the residents of Easton. In the new Congressional District Four Campaign, there are three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to advance to the November 6th …
I have been in Easton my whole life. I've served the town in a number of capacities and have never been so taken back by some people's vitriolic comments. I realize that once I comment, I will be subjecting myself to more insults by people who are unaware of the actual facts. However I can no longer sit back without commentating. The B.O.H. has worked many hours trying to resolve the problem Easton people may be facing. When we originally worked on this reg, it was done under the pressure of a critical alert with 55 Triple E mosquitos trapped in Easton alone. We did not have the time or state…
To the Editor: On Sunday, May 6th, Project Bread will celebrate the 2012 Walk for Hunger. The 20-mile route begins at the Boston Common and weaves through Boston, Brookline, Newton, Watertown, to Cambridge. In the current economic crisis, this year’s Walk has never been more important. I encourage Easton residents to consider taking part in this important event that helps families right here in our area who struggle to put food on the table almost everyday. Today in Massachusetts, over 700,000 people in Massachusetts do not have enough to eat. As the crisis continues, more and more Easton …
To the Editor: While I don’t want to engage in a debate through letters to the editor, I think it is important to point out a few factual errors in yesterday’s story about Michael Maloney (Newcomer Looks to Make Splash in Board of Selectmen Race) He states that the Shovelshop project is draining the town’s resources and “allowing money to flow out of a town’s limited budget and resources every month”. This is wrong. The Town has not spent any of its own money on the Shovelshop project. The Town neither owns the property, nor is buying it. It is a real estate transaction between Beacon and the…
Words of gratitude, appreciation and thanks will never be enough for what we need to say to our family, friends and community. First and foremost, we cannot express enough thanks to Ken Bowman, Michael McGowan and Nathan Everett for their acts of heroism and the risks they took with their own lives to save Brian Edlund from the accident and burning car. From what we understand, not only were you angels in the rescue, there were many angels watching over you to assist you and keep you all safe. Thankfully, there was a witness to the accident who immediately called 911 to obtain additional …
I’ve been thinking quite a bit about the recent article that will be up for vote on February 6 regarding the rent control board for the trailer park communities. The simple fact is that the entire article is a blatant infringement on the property rights of land owners; a fundamental right of ownership is to do with your property as you see fit. In my opinion, the town of Easton has no business imposing its will on private parties. Let’s leave the free market alone! Legally, the board of selectman may not be overstepping their boundaries, but what’s “just” isn’t always proper and certainly …
Dear Easton Friends and Neighbors, The Easton Cultural Council sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council invites you to participate in the formation of an official Cultural District in the Town of Easton. On July 27, 2011, Governor Patrick signed a bill into law (M.G.L.c.10&58A) that allows cities and towns to create state-sponsored cultural districts to stimulate new arts and cultural activity and attract creative business. An Easton Cultural Council District Sub-Committee has already been formed to develop a Cultural District which will be centered in the footprint of the North Easton…
I keep checking your web site to learn if there is any news on the shooting of DJ Henry that would help explain the actions of the police that night. This story should not go away. Unfortunately what happened to DJ could have happened to anyone who was there that night. There are so many unanswered questions. Nothing can bring DJ back. The police (A. Hess) need to be held accountable or cleared. If the district attorney has proof to support the police version it should be released - I keep hearing word transparency but I have yet to see it in action. This was not a movie. How could the …
The Easton Recreation Commission is pleased and excited to offer the opportunity for our town to obtain recreational multi-use facilities on Chestnut Street. After years of exploration and feasibility studies of multiple sites in town we are on the brink of bringing to fruition a long standing vision for a multipurpose recreational complex. This will be purchased through the use of CPA funding and will mark the first time in recent years CPA funds will be used for recreation. The conceptual plan consists of a Babe Ruth baseball field and a little league baseball field overlaid with three full…
