About this column:

OA sports are back in action. We're providing a look at what to expect from your hometown teams this fall.
Despite going 7-12 a year ago, the Oliver Ames volleyball team proved to be a more than formidable opponent, with nine of its 19 contests ending in five sets. Going into the sixth season as a program, the Tigers are hoping to use last season as a learning curve and return to the state tournament for the second time in the last three years. “Last year was tough because we had a lot of five match games where we lost,” head coach Corinne McCarthy said. “I think this year we have a better attitude and we are mentally tougher too as a result.” With a healthy mix of upper and underclassmen on this …
Despite going 4-6 last season, the Oliver Ames football team not only doubled its win total from the previous two years after going 1-9 in 2008 and 2009, but also finished in a three-way tie for first with Foxborough and Stoughton atop the Davenport Division (Foxborough won the small division of the Hockomock League based on tiebreaking procedures). Unlike 2010, however, the winners from both the Davenport and Rex-Kelley divisions will represent the Hockomock League in the MIAA football playoffs. “We went 3-1 last year in the Hock, which was a good start and we’re looking to improve on that…
Despite tough competition in the Hockomock League last year the Oliver Ames field hockey team fared to be a formidable opponent in 2010, compiling a record of 8-6-6 while also qualifying for the Division 1 South sectionals. During the state tournament, the Tigers earned a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Marshfield in the preliminary round before falling to Walpole – the eventual Div. 1 South Sectional championships – in the first round. Entering the 2011 campaign, the Tigers are hoping to be right up there as one of the top teams in the Hock and return to the state tournament. “Canton, …
One year after missing the state tournament in 2009, the Oliver Ames golf team rebounded nicely in 2010. After starting the season at 6-5, the Tigers compiled four straight wins and finished with a record of 10-5 en route to a return trip to the Division 2 South Sectionals, where they finished seventh out of sixteen teams. “We improved an awful lot and got better as the season went on,” said head coach Leo Duggan. This year Duggan and company hope for a return trip to the states. Early on, however, the team will need to find a way to replace last year’s senior captains in Liam Noonan and …
It’s safe to say that the Oliver Ames girls’ soccer team always has a target on its back under head coach Britt Sellmayer, who is entering his 18th season as the team's bench boss. It’s safe to say once again that OA will have that same target entering the 2011 campaign. After a 17-2-2 record last season that saw the Lady Tigers capture the Davenport Division championship while also advancing to the Division 1 South semifinals in 2010, the team enters the 2011 season as the favorites to repeat as the champs of the small division in the Hockomock League. While Sellmayer is eager to get the …
For a team that had to replace 17 seniors in 2009, the Oliver Ames boys’ soccer team fared pretty well in 2010. With an influx of youth, the Tigers -- despite finishing with a record of 5-8-6 – were one of seven teams from the Hockomock League to advance to the state tournament. As one of the last teams in, OA, seeded 22 in the Div. 1 South sectionals, upset 11th seeded Barnstable in the preliminary round before falling to No. 6 Weymouth in the first round. Head coach John Barata and company will look to capitalize on that momentum – after a successful off-season -- during the 2011 campaign…
