About this column:
A look at this year's Oliver Ames spring sports. It's been a bumpy road for the majority of the players on the OA boys' lacrosse team. A 2-15 season a year ago and a 5-12 season the year before has created an uphill battle for this year's version of the Tigers. But, with a solid core returning, coach Fran Yung is hoping 2012 will be a breakout year. "This year, everyone stepped up and said 'We want to get our own identity'," Yung said. "We’re passing a lot more. Although our stick skills need to improve, they’re not afraid to pass and they’re not afraid to look for the open guy. I love that kind of offense. That’s when you generate a lot …
Boys’ tennis looks to progress after starting 2-1 Things seem to be heading in the right direction for the Oliver Ames boys tennis team just three matches into the 2012 season Thanks to a strong singles lineup and improvement in the doubles game, the Tigers have started 2-1 and look to continue to progress under coach Ann Foresman. “I’m very pleased with the start so far,” she said. “I like that we are balanced throughout the lineup and we’ve really gotten some strong contributions from our doubles tandems that helped us get the first two wins of the year.” Against Attleboro, the team …
Girls' Track Eyes Similar Success After Indoor Championships After capturing the Hockomock League championships this winter, the Oliver Ames girls’ track coach Mike Darling sees similar success for the Lady Tigers this spring. Many members from winter, including Basia Osborone, Olivia Milieka, Emily Newman Michaela Lievi Laura Daley, Michaela Nichols (an individual indoor league champion in the high-jump), and tri-captains Kristi Kent, Shannon Hickey and Emily Grotz, return. The team also welcomes several newcomers that include Candace Steadman, Allie Brennan, Lindsey McNeice and Erin …
At Frothingham Park, winning hasn't been hard to come by. The Oliver Ames baseball team is coming off a 15-6 season a year ago and a 20-2 season the year before. With the majority of last year's Davenport Division championship team returning, the Tigers hope their winning tradition will continue in 2012. "Our first goal is to try to qualify for the tournament because we’ve qualified 24 out of 26 years," head coach Leo Duggan said. "That’s our first goal and then it’s just to keep improving every day." If the first two games are any indication, the 2-0 Tigers have little to improve upon so …
After a 7-11 season last year that resulted in the Oliver Ames girls' lacrosse team falling just short of the state tournament, this year's crop of Tigers is hoping to take that next step. "We want to be in the tournament," said OA coach Kelly Downs. "We have a tough schedule. We play Mansfield and Franklin. We play two games against Martha’s Vineyard and two games against Braintree. We don’t have an easy game, so to make the tournament is our No. 1 goal. We came up short last year by a couple of games." The Tigers, who dropped to 0-4 after a back-and-forth, 17-15, loss against Martha's …
Last year, the Oliver Ames softball team finished with a 14-8 record and won the Davenport Division to record its best season in school history under head coach Bob Huckabee. In 2012, the Lady Tigers will look to take the next step towards Hockomock League supremacy. But, this time around, the team will be led by first year coach Lindsey Allison, replacing Huckabee who left for Apponequet High School after five years at the helm. So far the transition has been pretty successful for Allison as her team is off to a 2-0 start. “I’m very excited,” said Allison (OA class of 2004), a former …
