A pre-season look at this year's Oliver Ames High School winter sports.
Cohesion will be the key for the Oliver Ames boys' and girls' swim and dive teams this year as they look to embark on another successful season. "Part of what we attempted this year is to unify the team so that we’re seen as one cohesive unity rather than breaking us up into boys and girls," head coach Lauren gray said. The unity, she said, will begin at the top. Gray named five captains to this year’s team. The leaders will be a mix between boys and girls. Matt Bates, who was a captain last year, will once again be lead this year's team, along with Harris Brenner, Chris Lockworth, Alaina …
When the Oliver Ames girls' basketball team takes the floor Tuesday night at Nixon Gymnasium in their season opener against Sharon, they'll try not to buy into the hype. It won't be easy. The defending Davenport Division Champions return all but two players from a team that went 18-5 and advanced to the South-Sectional Semi-Finals a year ago. "We’ve got to be careful and be mindful of what we need to do as a group and not let the outside influence us," OA head coach Elaine Clement-Holbrook said after a scrimmage against Braintree last week. "That’s what we need to do is just play at our …
Behind a strong second half of the 2010-11 season, the Oliver Ames boys’ basketball team did something that hasn’t been done since 1999 – reach the semifinals of the Division 2 South Sectionals. Now entering his third season at the helm, head coach Don Byron will look to lead his team to the next step in 2011-12. “I’m excited about it,” Byron said about the upcoming season. “We have a different look then what we had last year. We were a little bigger last year, but our top three guards are all back, so it will change the way we go about it a little bit.” Although things are looking positive…
At the end of last year, the Oliver Ames wrestling program transitioned itself from a dual-meet squad to a tournament team. Entering year six at the helm, head coach Adam Pomella hopes for his team to sustain its tournament success and improve on its dual-meet record. “I think we’ll be a good mix this year between tournament and dual-meet,” he said. “We have a ton of rookies who are looking phenomenal this year, so I think our dual-meet will be better than it was last year. But we are still looking for some kids to make some real, deep tournament runs.” With a lot of youth injected into the …
Throughout Mike Darling’s coaching tenure at Oliver Ames High School, the Tigers have continually meet high expectations to be one of the top track and field teams in the Hockomock League every year. Things are no different for Darling and company this winter. Returning several top performers from last year, both the boys and the girls are expected to give OA its second straight Davenport Division championship, while also retaining its status as a league power. With over 130 participants, the Tigers should have a healthy mix of youth and veterans for the upcoming season. “We have a large core…
