School on Wheels of Massachusetts seeks volunteer tutors for children impacted by homelessness

Can you spare a couple of hours a week to influence the future of a child impacted by homelessness? School on Wheels of Massachusetts, (SOWMA), is seeking one-on-one afterschool tutors to work with children in grades K-12 starting in the fall. Tutors are needed at shelters, hotels, and elementary schools in Brockton, New Bedford, Norwell, and Stoughton.

Each SOWMA tutor is matched with a student with whom he or she works for one or two hours a week on homework and school projects. Tutoring sessions are designed to supply the layers of learning that may be missing due to frequent moves and school absences. Every SOWMA tutor is expected to serve as a mentor and positive role model.

Teens and adults aged 18 and older are needed; no prior experience is required. SOWMA volunteers must undergo an instructional Orientation Session and Resource Workshop before beginning to tutor. Upcoming Orientation Sessions and Resource Workshops for Fall 2013 will be held at the SOWMA headquarters, 790 W. Chestnut St., Brockton, MA 02301, or HarbOur House, 713 Shawmut Ave., New Bedford, MA 02746, on the following days and times:
