Good Samaritan Medical Center Hosts Cancer Survivor Celebration

An uplifting event hosted by Good Samaritan celebrated cancer survivors.

Thursday evening, Good Samaritan Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Program and Radiation Oncology Center hosted a cancer survivor celebration at Thorny Lea Golf Club. The event was in response to Cancer Survivor Month, which is June, and welcomed nearly 200 people to acknowledge the many aspects and impacts of a cancer diagnosis on individuals and their families, as well as to celebrate hope.

According to the National Cancer Institute, “Many survivors can now expect to live a full life following a cancer diagnosis. In fact, due to scientific advances that have improved survival, as well as to an aging population, the number of cancer survivors is expected to increase to an estimated 19 million by 2024”.

Dr. Rohini Sakhuja, Chair of Pathology and Chair of the Cancer Committee, and Dr. Jason Zaus, Director of Radiation Oncology, both spoke at the event about the importance of frequent cancer screenings and taking precautionary measures.

The program was uplifting and featured a personal story from two-time cancer survivor Bill Conlon, former Police Chief of Brockton. Conlon used humor to remind the crowd to remain vigilant and optimistic about living a full and healthy life after a cancer diagnosis.

Robert Farrand from Easton, a current patient undergoing treatment for lung cancer at Good Samaritan, was also in attendance. He expressed his gratitude to the staff of Good Samaritan, saying “They have been amazing, always welcoming, smiling and reassuring”.
