Parts of Mass. Soaked with 5+ Inches of Rain

Downpours were expected to continue into the night Monday.

Parts of Massachusetts were soaked with more than 5 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.

The highest unofficial total for Sunday morning through Monday morning was 5.27 inches in West Acushnet, according to the National Weather Service. Boston received 2.29 inches.

NWS reported the following totals in Middlesex County:

  • Newton: 2.70
  • Acton: 2.58
  • Chelmsford: 2.57
  • Reading: 2.50
  • Tewksbury: 2.41
  • Woburn: 2.29
The following totals were reported in Norfolk County:
  • Weymouth: 3.00
  • Sharon: 2.71
  • Foxborough: 2.44

The rain caused havoc across the region, opening up sinkholes and contributing to crashes like one in the O'Neill Tunnel Monday morning involving about a dozen vehicles.

Rain was expected to continue through Monday night. The forecast called for sun the rest of the week.
