Senators Joyce and Kennedy Announce Grant to Preserve Civil War History in Easton

BOSTON - Senators Brian A. Joyce and Thomas P. Kennedy are pleased to announce that Easton has been awarded a $7,500 grant through the Civil War Preservation grant program. The funds will allow the community to determine where to move the memorial flagpole and plaque that is currently in The Rockery to a place with higher visibility. The flagpole and plaque honor fallen Easton residents from the Civil War, World War II and the Korean War.

“Easton has a great history and the town should be applauded for taking the initiative and securing funding to make this important memorial more accessible to residents,” said Joyce.

“This grant is a big step towards helping the community share in the town’s proud military history,” said Kennedy. “I look forward to seeing the new memorial design.”

The Civil War Preservation grant program recently awarded nearly $180,000 to 37 cities, towns, and non-profit groups across the Commonwealth for the preservation of Civil War memorials, monuments, historic documents, books, and more.

The program provides matching grants of up to 50 percent of a project’s total cost, but not exceeding $7,500, to preserve existing Civil War memorials, monuments, gravestones, document collections, and more. Applicants were either municipalities or non-profit organizations including libraries, historical societies, museums, or universities.
