Wendy's Responds to Obamacare; Cutting Hours for Workers

The Wendy's Corporation has not yet formulated a plan to respond to the Affordable Care Act as a Nebraska franchisee will cut non-managerial positions to 28 hours a week.

Officials from the Wendy's Corporation said they haven't formulated a plan to respond to the Affordable Care Act after a Wendy's franchisee in Nebraska announced that they would cut employees hours to avoid providing health care.

"We are still reviewing our approach to the Affordable Care Act, when the employer mandate goes into effect in 2014," said Wendy's Corporate Media Contact Bob Bertini of company-operated restaurants.

The company does not provide a breakdown of company and franchise restaurants, said Bertini. In the immediate area, however, the Wendy's Restaurants in Marlborough, Westborough and Southborough are all operated by Wendy's Corporate.

Gary Burdette, the Vice President of Operations for the franchise that covers 100 Wendy's in Nebraska, told WOWT Channel 6 in Omaha, Nebraska that all non-management employees hours will be cut to 28 hours a week to avoid providing health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. According to the information in the report, the cuts would affect roughly 100 employees.

This decision is by one franchisee in Nebraska, said Bertini.

"Our franchisees are independent business people, and they make the decisions regarding benefits for their restaurant teams," he said. "As small business employers, our franchisees are facing rising food and operating costs and many new government regulations."

And you know nothing of what YOU speak. I work in a hospital. People think hospitals/doctors make way too much money. We can't even pay our bills on a monthly basis. Every two weeks we are skrimping to just cover payroll. Doctors may not be skrimping, but they are not overpaid. They have dedicated over 8-12 years of their lives to education and deserve what they get. Now Obamacare wants to make health screenings FREE, annual exams FREE. Guess what? Nothing is free. We have to pay the staff, buy supplies, etc. for these free exams for the "less fortunate". Obamacare will close many hospitals down and you will see many others stop taking these patients because what is paid doesn't even cover expenses. You make your own fortune. It is not my job to take care of them. I just need to take care of my own family.

@ Russel, I have never accused health care workers of " making too much money " for what they do except for those guilty of fraud. I believe that huge profits are taken by the insurance companies and other assorted nefarious denizens that get rich( see CEO compensations at AIG and others) while charging outrageous premiums to individuals, and denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. I support single payer national health care, over the broken system we have now.

So you think CEO's who make, say $20 million or whatever a year are wrong to do so? They are "nefarious". Interesting. Here's the thing. Public companies are run by Boards of Directors. They pay the CEO whatever price they choose to pay (and that the market can bear). Who are YOU to determine how much a person makes is "too much"? I make $35,000 a year. What if I said that I thought it was outrageous that the person down the road made $100,000 a year. I think he makes too much money. I think he is "nefarious". What about Bill Gates? Does he make "too much" money? The way I see it, he created a product that had a group of people willing to pay for it. He deserves every penny he has made. Don't be jealous of others. As far as insurance companies denying coverage to those with a pre-existing condition. Well, you know, it IS a business. I don't see a problem with that at all. I do NOT support single payer national health care. Buying insurance is a CHOICE. It absolutely should NOT be mandated (just lilke the Supreme Court has ruled, by the way).
