Ditch the Fluoride

Catch Renée every weekend at the Marketplace at Simpson Spring, Saturdays 10-2p

Although the tides are slowly changing, most people as well as most health professionals are still greatly convinced that fluoride is an essential component of good, healthy oral hygiene. And although it may seem new, the fluoride debate has been going on for decades. Governments and health care professionals have been trying to battle out of whether to fluoridate or not fluoridate since the 1940's when the practice began.

For many of those decades however, fancy advertising from toothpaste companies has made us immune to see fluoride as anything but beneficial.

Today, the information making us choose otherwise is growing louder and stronger. One by one, many cities around the world are opting to stop fluoridating municipal water. One by one, informed citizens are choosing fluoride-free toothpastes. One by one, we are causing a ripple effect that is turning the tides on how we see toothpaste and its role in our health.

I'll keep it simple this week. Below are some facts on fluoride. Here at the Marketplace at Simpson Spring, we aim to educate you about the controversial topics discussed in today's news and blogs while offering healthy alternatives - both available for purchase nationally and homemade options.

We have noticed the fluoride-free toothpastes offered at the Simpson Spring Store (open M-F from 9-6, Sat 9-4) have flown off the shelves and want to let you know we hear you. We will expand the health and wellness products offered in the Simpson Store as well as offering more of the amazingly effective products offered weekly by Rosie Bud Farm (see Pete at his table for a shaving kit, I'm loving mine!) and Marshfield Trading Post (cleaning supplies, hygiene and skin care products nature's way). Let us know about the products you travel to the health food stores to purchase or that you make yourself!

Fluoride Facts
  • Fluoride is a known toxin.
  • Fluoride is described by its manufacturers' safety data as a 'hazardous waste'.
  • Fluoride is illegal to dump at sea.
  • Fluoride consumption by human beings increases the general cancer death rate.
  • Fluoride exposure disrupts the synthesis of collagen and leads to the breakdown of collagen in bone, tendon, muscle, skin, cartilage, lungs, kidney and trachea.
  • Fluoride inhibits antibody formation in the blood.
  • Fluoride has a disruptive effect on various tissues in the body.
  • Fluoride confuses the immune system and causes it to attack the body's own tissues, and increases the tumor growth rate in cancer prone individuals.
  • Fluoride kills red blood cells and damages gastric mucosa, resulting in the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
  • Fluoride is medically categorized as protoplasmic poison, which is why it is used to kill rodents.
  • Fluoride is a cumulative poison - we excrete about half what we ingest. The rest is stored, mainly in the bones, where it increases the density but changes the internal architecture of the bone. This makes bones more brittle and prone to fracture.
  • Fluoride can actually cause a type of tooth decay called dental fluorosis - most commonly observed in children with white spots leading to brown spots on teeth.
  • Babies and young children are at the greatest risk for various problems where their health is concerned from exposure to too much fluoride.
  • Fluoride has been linked to osteoporosis, thyroid problems, endocrine problems.
  • Fluoride is a neurotoxin and has been shown to cause a decrease in intelligence if given to a developing brain because it passes through the blood brain barrier.
  • Fluoride damages receptors in the brain, which prevents essential brain molecules from attaching to their receptors. This means it stops important normal reactions from occurring.
  • Consistent with the in vitro and animal research, studies of human populations have reported associations between fluoride exposure and damage to the male reproductive system.
