Why Goat Milk Soap?

Benefits of Goat Milk vs. water based soaps

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids work by breaking down the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. Water based soaps may use harsh chemical acids for this purpose.
  • Vitamins-contain high amounts of Vitamin A which helps repair damaged skin and is known to reduce lines and wrinkles; water based soaps may contain artificial vitamins, but most do not.
  • Cream- Fat molecules are an important feature of making good soap. Goat milk soap will not dry your skin, but naturally moisturizes it to be healthy and vibrant.
  • Minerals-Goat milk contains Selenium. It is believed by scientists to have an important role in preventing  skin cancer. Selenium can also help prevent damage to the skin from excessive time in the sun.

Come by to see "Gentle on My Skin" Goat Milk Soaps and their other skin care products at the Farmers Market on Saturday, 8/17. Ask about their Sampler Specials!

My First Gluten-Free Baking Experience

Submitted by Sammi of Sammi's Stuff

I wanted to tackle baking. Growing up, my mom and I would always cook and bake together in the kitchen. It was a fun time that we always enjoyed, not to mention the yummy by-products!  After years of having a blast and so many fond memories of doing so, I would like to think I know a thing or two in the kitchen. Not to say that I am a pro cook who can compete with the top-chefs of the world, but that I could make it through crafting a juicy dinner or sweet baked treats. But being thrown into the gluten-free world head first, put me into a tail spin.  I was scared, nervous and quite frankly didn't know what to expect, let alone where in the world to begin! One of my first recipes was plucked from a gluten-free cookbook...red velvet cupcakes. They looked so luscious and creamy, just had to give it a whirl. The recipe came from one of the best gluten-free cupcake places in the city, while the ingredient list made me cringe how could they come out anything but perfect? Well some Garbanzo bean flour, spelt flour, agave nectar, 2 eggs, red food coloring and oil later....this is what was created. The Frankenstein of the cupcake world! WOW this was going to be a long ride. I couldn't even stomach the taste of the batter!

Was there some type of magic that happened while in the oven that turned them from crumbly foul tasting blobs into velvety moist little cupcakes? I think not. They ended up looking like dried up meatloaf balls with the texture of toasted bread and the taste of thick garbanzo bean flour goop. This was a recipe for disaster not beautiful cupcakes!  It was right about then that my mission for gluten-free baking began….

Years later, I am pleased to bring Sammi's Stuff, TASTY Gluten-Free Baking to the Marketplace at Simpson Spring!

YOU SAID IT!

A Rave Review for a Marketplace Vendor: Indoor Organic Farm of Attleboro

PRAISE FOR WHEATGRASS
I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease 3 years ago. Both the small and large joints of my body becomes inflamed, making walking, sleeping, and using my hands very painful and difficult. My most recent flare-up, e.g., the return of inflammation, was this winter. Although I was again prescribed the steroid prednisone, the knuckles in my fingers remained large and I was told by a jeweler  that I would not be able to wear rings on my right hand again.

Two weeks ago, rings slid onto my finger. I attribute this happening to the accumulative effect of a dietary change I made in late June.   I bought a Vitamix, which allows me to combine raw foods (fruits and vegetables) and blend them each day  into a smoothie. Also, I juice WHEATGRASS every day.

Even if you do not have an autoimmune disease, I recommend that you buy a wheatgrass juicer and wheatgrass, both of which are sold at the Marketplace at Simpson Spring, and invest in your health. I recommend you see Brenda, who enthusiastically represents The Indoor Organic Farm of Attleboro each Saturday. She'd be happy to answer your questions about the amazing benefits of this wonderful grass.

mmmmmmm another delicious recipe, this one from Judy or Fior d'Italia (The Pastaman)

Ravioli with Tomatoes and Basil Dressing

     INGREDIENTS
    • 1 small bunch basil, stems removed
    • 1 pound fresh cheese ravioli
    • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
    • 2 tablespoons lime juice
    • Salt and pepper
    • 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved or quartered. [Grape tomatoes are smaller than cherry tomatoes and less juicy, so they won't water down dishes. They're as colorful as candy, too (and almost as sweet).]
    DIRECTIONS
    1. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook basil until just wilted, about 30 seconds. With a slotted spoon, remove basil and run under cold water; drain thoroughly. Add ravioli to pot and cook according to package instructions, then drain.

    2. Meanwhile, in a blender, puree basil and olive oil. Stir in lime juice and season with salt and pepper. Season tomatoes with salt and pepper. Divide ravioli among plates and top with tomatoes and dressing.
