Construction Begins at Prospect and Foundry

With roadwork continuing at Five Corners throughout the fall, Easton residents are likely to run into further delays approximately a mile-and a-half down Foundry Street at its intersection with Prospect Street.

Beginning this week, construction to widen roads and add sidewalks at Prospect and Foundry Street will commence. The project is expected to continue in the coming weeks, finalizing with the installation of traffic lights in December.

"The contractor is on site now," said Greg Lucas of Beta Group, the consulting firm hired to assist with the project. "He’s doing some preliminary work right now."

The intersection is the site where Easton 22-year-old Nicole St. John tragically died in a car accident in February of 2009. Since the event, . They got their wish when the town to approve the town's borrowing of $500,000 for the capital project.

Some of that money was used to buy small parcels of land from adjacent property owners: 309 square feet for the amount of $1,300 and 217 square feet for the amount of $100.

Taking the easements was necessary in order to widen the road, DPW Director Wayne Southworth said.

"Appraisers on the property have talked to [the owners]," he said. "There’s a lot of activity in that intersection right now, but these are very small pieces of property," he said.

The selectmen approved the transaction Monday night.

"Its good to see the project moving forward so quickly," Board of Selectmen Chair said.
