Shaw's in Stoughton to Close, Company Says; Easton Store Stays Open

Identified as an unprofitable store "not meeting company goals," the Shaw's in Stoughton will close by August 3, the supermarket chain announced Monday.

The Stoughton Shaw's, located at 666 Washington St., is one of six local stores the company will close by that date (the others are Fall River, Fairhaven, Taunton, and Westerly, RI and Woonsocket, RI), according to the Boston Globe.

"The stores identified have not been profitable for quite some time, and despite the best efforts of the company and our associates, we have not been able to reposition them to better compete in the marketplace and don't anticipate being able to change this trend," the company said in a statement posted on the ABC 6 Providence, RI website.

"While the decision to close a store is always difficult - given the impact on associates and customers - it was made only after careful evaluation and was guided by what is best for the company's ongoing success and future growth," the statement continued.

Shaw's in Stoughton anchors the Shaw's Plaza. It is one of the largest employers in town, with more than 100 people working there, according to data from the Massachusetts Labor and Workforce Development.
