BLOG: Why Easton?

An outsider's views on what makes Easton special and why I've decided to no longer be an outsider.

Greetings from the Town of Easton Planning Department. I am Gary Anderson, the new Planning Director. I’m thrilled to begin work here and to start growing roots in this great community.

I come to you from Connecticut, where I was born and raised and where I worked as a planner for the past several years.  While I very much enjoyed my previous job, my wife and I have always remained open to the idea of making one big family move, for the right professional opportunity in the right community, almost anywhere in New England.  The move would have to be to a place we really loved, where we would be excited about raising our kids (3 years and 2 months), and where we would both feel challenged and engaged.  For many reasons, we decided Easton is the right place for us, both for me professionally and for our family.

So what exactly attracted us to Easton?  What makes this town special?  As I begin my role here, one of my primary goals is to get to know people in the community and begin building relationships. I thought letting the Easton community know what we as outsiders found attractive about this town would be a good place to start. So...why Easton?

First, Easton is a great place.  As a planner, I think a lot about how places make me feel and I am partial to interesting and unique destinations.  There really is so much to like in this town: Incredible historic architecture; thousands of acres of protected open space; a walkable and vibrant historic village; a thriving, gorgeous local college; active agriculture and local commerce. There is a little bit of everything here and that makes Easton interesting, vibrant and sustainable.

Easton is an engaged community, with an abundance of wisdom, talent and skill amongst its residents. People are passionate, certainly about specific issues, but even more so about doing what’s best for Easton.  This appears to be true of those who are elected/appointed leaders, and of the population as a whole. I have also been struck by the professionalism and talent of the staff here in Town Hall.  The success of a community hinges on people being willing to come together and work towards common goals. This is absolutely true here, both inside the Town offices and all around town.

Easton is engaged in proactive planning.  One thing I already love about Easton is the balance between preservation and a vision for the future.  The people here have worked hard to protect what is important to the Town- most notably Easton’s community character, history and natural resources.  At the same time, Easton is clearly willing to look forward and actively engage in conversation and planning that will guide the Town into the years ahead, while protecting the community assets that make it special.  The update of the town’s Master Plan will
offer an incredible opportunity for residents to collectively shape this town’s future.  I can’t wait to be a part of this effort.

Those are several things that have impressed me about this Town during my short time here.  I’ll be interested to see what attributes I’ll add to this list over time, and I'm excited to work in partnership with many of you to ensure Easton continues to be a great place, now and into the future.

What about you? Why do you choose to call Easton home?  What do you love about it here?
