Accessible Hiking at Borderland This Week

The following is a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation:

WHAT: The Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Universal Access Program (UAP), will offer adaptive hiking for individuals with disabilities, their families and friends, at various state parks throughout the summer and fall. Assistive equipment and teamwork will help people of all abilities access conventional hiking trails at a leisurely pace. Equipment, including Terra Trek manual wheelchairs, baby joggers, walkers, crutches and gait  belts, as well as staff instruction, will be provided.

Cost is $2 per person, $4 for families, and $10 for groups. The DCR-sponsored event is administered through Outdoor Access/Stavros, working together to expand accessible outdoor recreation opportunities.Along with hiking opportunities such as this, UAP also provides accessible sailing, kayaking, rowing, canoeing, cycling and horseback riding programs in Massachusetts parks throughout summer and fall as well as accessible cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, kicksledding, snowmobiling and ice skating in winter.  UAP strives to increase participation among persons with disabilities in outdoor recreational activities in integrated settings.
