Fact and Fiction about Repealing the Automatic Gas Tax

By now you have heard that a grass roots group of taxpayers has made up petitions and gathered over 100,000 signatures of voters, which is more than enough to put this question on the ballot for the rest of the people to decide.

The people who orchestrated this signature drive are not affiliated with any organized group, have no real financial backing and so far are beating the odds to allow for a fair airing of this automatic tax increase.

Here’s a little background on how we got here;

Governor “Tax it all Deval” Patrick banged his fist for a shakedown of working, taxpaying people in Massachusetts and the greedy cowards who are supposed to be serving us and knowing full-well that the economy is not exactly thriving felt compelled to oblige the governor.  But how would they go about this?   

The “leadership” in the House of Representatives and the Senate concocted a scheme that would take more money away from us and use it as they please and not a gasoline tax’ intended use but also came up with a plan of tying future gasoline tax increases to the inflation rate.

The problem is that this type of taxing is nothing more than “Taxation Without Representation”.  Does anybody remember what this is?

The second thing is that it would shield the gutless cowards who voted for this tax from the voters as after a couple of years, the voters might tend to forget how this all happened. 

Right now is a great time to acknowledge that our Representative Claire “Speaker’s Pet” Cronin and Senator Brian Joyce both voted for every new tax put on the table this year.   They also voted to not actually enact the new tax until after the next election and you wonder why I call them cowards?

Now, regarding the petition, the “ruling class” will put every obstacle in its way, but it will go forward.  In fact on the very day the organizers stood on the stairs the State House, the opposition (special interest groups) was passing out literature telling lies about the intent of the petition.

To clarify the petition, here it is in a nutshell:

The petition ONLY removes the “adjusted for inflation” portion of the tax bill and does not remove the initial 3 cent increase, which will begin after the crooks are safely reelected.  If politicians want to attempt to raise taxes, they should do so at their own peril and be accountable to the voters.  If this new level of cowardice is allowed to stand, you can expect pretty much every tax to “automatically” increase.

Please take this seriously and pay attention.  This may be our last chance to curb runaway government.
