Easton Obituary: Donald L Bergeron

Donald L. Bergeron, former high school physics teacher

Donald L. Bergeron, 83, a 54-year resident of South Easton, passed away at home on Tuesday.

Donald, born in Brockton to Simeone J. and Mary Z. Bergeron, graduated from Coyle High School in 1949, before he enlisted in the Navy, following the example of his older brothers who fought during War II.

He enrolled at Stonehill College, where he met his wife of 54 years, Marion C. (Harris) Bergeron, in 1953.

After two years at Stonehill he enlisted in the Air Force as an Aviation Cadet. He returned to Stonehill after two years and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1958.

He earned his Master's Degree at Bridgewater State College 1960 and he spent summers studying Physics at numerous universities with grants from the National Science Foundation: University of Vermont in 1959, Illinois Institute of Technology in 1960, American University in 1968, and the University of New York at Geneseo in 1972.

He taught Physics at Brockton High School from 1958 to 1971, except for the 1960-1961 academic year, when he studied at Brown University. He taught at Sharon High School from 1971 to 1988. While he was teaching, he took many classes at Eastern Nazarene College and one at Bridgewater State College.
He also worked part-time as a Mutuals Clerk at the Raynham-Taunton Dog Track until he retired from teaching and worked there full-time for many years. Other jobs he had included working at a part-time consultant for Polaroid Corporation for two years and as a part-time lab instructor at Stonehill for two years.
He was a founding member and communicant of Holy Cross Parish of South Easton. He was also a member of the Century Club and the Pillar Society at Stonehill College.

In addition to his wife Marion, Donald leaves a son, Donald A. of Hawaii and his wife Joann; daughters Mary L. Dade of Bethlehem, N.H., Rita R. Fish of Stoughton and her husband Jeffrey J., and Marion L. of Taunton and Carolyn King, a special friend of the family, of Taunton. He was predeceased by a son, Mark A. and a daughter, Dana Ann.

He leaves four grandsons; Stephen Dade of Billerica and his wife Stefanie, Michael Dade of Colorado, his wife Tina and their daughter Mya-Rhae, Jeffrey D. Fish of Easton, and Kyle Bergeron of Hawaii. He was also predeceased by two grandsons; Donald J. Bergeron and Matthew Dade.

He also leaves a sister, Virginia Burgoyne of Duxbury, two brothers, Robert of Holderness, N.H. and his wife Jean, and Raymond of Duxbury and his wife Sue, and was predeceased by a sister Rita Bergeron and brother Richard Bergeron. He leaves many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at Kane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 605 Washington Street (Rte. 138) Easton, on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Monday at 9 a.m. from Kane Funeral Home, followed by a funeral mass at Holy Cross Church at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
