June 23rd to June 27th is National Weather Service Lightning Safety Awareness Week, and Fire Chief Kevin Partridge would like to make Easton residents aware of and educated on lightning safety.
Thunderstorms are most likely to occur in the summer in New England, and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning can be deadly.
Chief Partridge encourages Easton residents and those who plan outdoor activities to use NWS lightning safety toolkits and to develop a lightning safety plan. The local NWS office in Taunton is also a resource for information about lightning safety plans. Contact Glenn Field, NWS Taunton’s Warning Coordination Meteorologist, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 508-823-1983, ext. 223 for further information.
Chief Partridge also reminds residents of a few ways to monitor conditions for thunderstorms:
Check on the Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlook to monitor where the potential severe thunderstorms could be in the next few days.
Carry a hand-held NOAA Weather Radio with a warning alarm that will alert you to Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings.
