Elderly Pair Trapped in Easton Elevator

Two elderly women were rescued from a broken elevator on July 15 at the Compass Medical Building.

Easton Fire Lieutenant Michael Greene said at around 10 a.m. they got the call reporting an elevator at the building was broken down and two subjects were trapped inside.

Greene said the elevator broke because of power fluctuations caused by too many air conditioners running on the grid at the same time.

“They didn’t actually lose power,” he said. “When it came back up the hydraulics in the elevator were stuck between floors.”

Greene said the elevator wasn’t built for use by people, as the building used to be a wood factory and was designed for short workloads. He added it didn’t have any safeties on it.

“It kind of went under the radar,” he said.

Greene said the pair were trying to get an appointment with the optometrist upstairs and were stuck in the elevator under an hour.

“We were able to open the second floor elevator door to get them more air,” he said.
