Borderland Mansion to Undergo Renovations This Summer

The first phase began last week.

The former home of Oakes and Blanche Ames on Massapoag Ave will be undergoing a facelift this spring and summer.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation announced plans for restoration last week as part of "Preservation Month."

The first phase, which includes $75,000 of work on the third floor will address damage caused by leaks. The scope of the work will include lead paint removal and asbestos abatement, replacement of plumbing lines, ceiling repair and painting, according to DCR.

“The Ames Mansion is a gem in the agency’s portfolio of historic properties,” said Lambert. “As an agency, our mission is to protect, promote, and enhance the tremendous cultural resources under our care. The work we plan to complete at the Ames Mansion is not only critical to its preservation but will serve to maintain this unique resource for the enjoyment and education of future generations.”

State Senator Brian Joyce, said in a statement this week that he has "long championed repairs to the structure."

“The Ames family is among the most important in our nation’s industrial, political, military, literary, and philanthropic history," he said. "I am delighted that these much needed improvements will help prevent further deterioration of this historic gem."

According to the Borderland State Park website, the park, formerly the estate of Easton socialites Blanche and Oakes Ames, has been property of the state since 1971.
