Sears Qualifies for Recount

Town Clerk said Wednesday that Elaine Sears had returned the necessary paperwork to officially request a recount for the April 26 Housing Authority election results.

Sears, a Council on Aging bus driver, , 377-375, to incumbent Sandra Conan, a Parker Terrace resident who has been on the Housing Authority for 15 years.

Gillis said of the 128 signatures submitted for certification, only 46, or 36 percent,  voted in the election. He said it was not a requirement, however, for signatures to come from those who voted.

Sears said she originally opted out of a recount but changed her mind after many of her supporters urged her to move forward with the process.

"I felt a duty to the residents of Easton who need active and concerned representation on the Housing Authority," she said in a statment on April 28.  "As a bus driver for the seniors for many years I have heard their concerns and their fears. I know what’s needed to bring senior housing up to standard after years of neglect, some of which occurred under the watch of my opponent."

Gillis said he will meet with the registrars and set a date for a recount in the coming weeks. He said he is seeking eight to ten volunteers to serve in the capacity of “ballot counters” and “ballot readers”. Interested volunteers should contact Gillis at JGillis@easton.ma.us or 508-230-0530.
