Snow Removal 'On Schedule' to Open Schools on Monday

Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District schools are likely to open on Monday, but a final decision has yet to be made.

Snow removal at the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District schools is on track to have all five schools open on Monday, according to Superintendent Dr. Michael Harvey.

"We are on schedule with our cleaning activities to be open tomorrow," Harvey told Hamilton-Wenham Patch at about 1 p.m. on Sunday. Later, Harvey added that he is waiting to make a final decision until he hears from the Hamilton Department of Public Works and Wenham Highway Department about the progress of snow removal on side streets and around bus stops.

Some North Shore schools have announced they will be closed on Monday, including public schools in Peabody, Marblehead, Salem and Swampscott. But none of the school districts immediately bordering the two towns, including Beverly, Danvers, Ipswich, Manchester-Essex or Masconomet had cancelled school on Monday, as of 3:30 p.m. Pingree School in Hamilton also planned to be open on Monday, as of 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Essex Agricultural High School in Danvers is canceled on Monday.

Yep- I can see school from my house- and my kids walk 100 yards to school- I'm definitely in the minority here, but I still think I speak for parents who live near a snowy bus stop that's got drifts 8 feet high that still need to go to work today. The HWRSD was put in a tough position. As far as I see it- you have two options. 1. Your child's safety is your #1 concern. You get them safely to school some how, some way. You are late to work, you spend extra money on gas, and you are totally inconvenienced. You're angry and upset, but you get your kids to school safely. As a parent, you've done your job. You're still fuming at HW school district. You form a committee so this won't happen again 2. You make a statement and keep your kids at home. Student strike. You try to work from home. You call babysitter. Kids go sledding, have fun. Now put the other shoe on for a moment, and let's stay HWRDS DID cancel school. You'd be hustling to find a babysitter or some sort of coverage for your kids, right? You'd have an even angrier groiup of parents who need to take a day off from work, or spend $$$ on alternative day care... I think the HW School District made a tough decision, but probably the lesser of two evils...

I agree with Mr. Goodridge, children need to be in school more not less! I planned a bit ahead, left a minute or two earlier and dropped my son at school on the way. The sidewalks were clear from our home to the school.

Exactly. We should be commending the town officials for getting the job done instead of criticizing them! I can only imagine the complaints if school actually was closed.

Actually we have a car-pool, some folks only drive once a week (or less). We got it together with the neighbors and family.
