With Tribe Casino on Track, Commercial Casinos in Southeast Off The Table

Casino in Taunton, 10 miles from Easton is still drawing concerns from Easton officials.

Gaming Commission members say the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is on track to develop a casino in Taunton approximately 10 miles from the Easton border at the intersection of Route 24 and Route 140. As a result, no commercial proposals for southeastern Massachusetts will be considered, according to WBUR radio. But the tribe still needs to get federal approval to build the casino.

“At the moment, the tribe is in the position to do what it has the right to do,” Gaming Commission Chairman Steve Crosby told WBUR. “If it gets the approval now or later, if the compact and goes through the land into trust process, there will not be any commercial license, period.”

The Taunton Womponoag casino is .

Acting Director of Community Planning Stephanie Danielson said at a recent Board of Selectmen meeting that the biggest concern about the casino would be the added traffic on Routes 138 and 106 because of accidents occurring on Route 24 “frequently at 44, 140, and 495 during rush hour traffic.”

Danielson said such accidents cause cars to get off the highway and clog roads, a problem that would be exacerbated by an additional 20,000 cars per day and “more inebriated drivers.”

What do you think Easton? Will a casino in Taunton be harmful in Easton?

Just say "No" to casinos in Massachusetts. And the problems that go with them, go away.

Call the casino what you want, it will be operated by the Genting Group and a majority of our US dollars will go to Malaysia. The Native Americans will have very little to do with it.

I agree with above comment. I have looked up the Genting Group. why not let the politicians take it over. They already have their hands in our pockets.

Where Milford, Massachusetts and Taunton, Massachusetts joined the Hockomock League for sports recently, then feel free to read on the Milford/Patch.com website on the following articles: 1) Family of Matthew Denice Appeal for Justice 2) Immigration Officials Issue "Detainer" for Suspect in Fatal Crash 3) Unlicensed Driver Charged in Fatal Crash 4) Nicholas D. @Bill "The Swede" Anderson - try reading two articles: 1) Mansfield/Patch.com - article by @Patrick Maguire-editor/Patch-"Hockomock League to Expand" -June 13, 2011 and 2) Easton/Patch.com article by @Tim Rosenthal on June 22, 2011 - under Sports -"OA Athletic Director Excited for Hockomock League Expansion." Read Stephanie Danielson's last two paragraphs above regarding casino traffic and the estimate she used for an additional 20,000 cars per day on the roads in the area/casino related, then read current accidents on Rte 24 -google a search for the latest snap-shot on DUI's there-Massachusetts State Police, articles are all over the Foxboro/Patch. The league expansion to include Taunton and Milford for sports, and now the continued talk of casino's within 10 minutes of the Easton Schools and to Stonehill College students. The promise of casino $$$'s -see/read the Boston Globe article/chart- google a search for it, regarding how much money was promised to each city/town within Massachusetts. Both Taunton and Milford were in strong consideration for casinos.
