Southeastern Boys' Varsity Soccer Team Wins Mayflower

The Southeastern boys’ varsity soccer team won the Mayflower League this season, with a 14-2 record, and they also distinguished themselves as one of the top goal-scoring teams in the region.    The team also made it to the second round of the Division Two South Sectional State Tournament, and although they experienced a tough loss  (losing 6 – 0 to Pembroke), they had a great season overall.

“The guys were awesome – very coachable, extremely motivated, and for the first time they came into the season with confidence, which is a new thing for us,” said their coach, James Braga.

Players in the Patch region include sophomore Xavier Keenan, an all-star from Sharon, Nick Armas, one of the tri-captains from Stoughton,  Anthony Monteiro, from Stoughton, and Shutaro Tsuchida, an all-star player who is a Japanese foreign exchange student living in Mansfield.

This is the second consecutive year that the soccer team has won the Mayflower Division, having an 11-2-1 record last year.  This year, however, the team had an even more successful year, having led the region in goal-scoring.   The team scored 57 goals in 16 games, which was the best record in eastern Massachusetts.

“We only had two losses, and they were very close,” Braga said.

Because of their high number of wins, Coach Braga was able to choose five all-stars from the team.  They are senior Jeffrey Pierre, a midfielder who was the leading goal scorer; senior Craig Arsenault, a goalie; senior Chris Ribeiro, a mid fielder,  junior Shutaro Tsuchida, a forward; and  sophomore Xavier Keenan, a mid-fielder.

Not only did the goal-scorers have an outstanding year, but so did the main goalie, Craig Arsenault.    Craig only let in 13 goals during the whole regular season.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the team has qualified for the state tournament, and the seventh year that James Braga has coached the team.    The team’s three captains included seniors Craig Arsenault; Chris Ribeiro and Nick Armas.  Two of the players’ relatives, Greg Ribeiro and Jensen Pierre also helped the team as assistant coaches.  The full team included:
