Southeastern Regional Senior Mark Wilburn Wins Gold Medal at 62nd Annual New England Theater Conference Convention (NETC)

(South Easton, MA) Mark Wilburn, a Performing Arts student at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School (SRVTHS), impressed judges and took 1st place in Acting at the NETC this October 24-27. His performance included a comedic monologue from “The Actor’s Nightmare” and a dramatic from “The Tooth of Crime.”

In addition to the Gold win, Bronze winners from SRVTHS include Jonathan Berry of North Easton (Set Design) and Jesse Arruda of Brockton (Costume Design).

“I was surprised. When I heard Southeastern called, I thought it would be a different student. I was very surprised to hear my name,” said Mark. “My mom was there and she was very happy when it happened.” In addition to a gold medal, Mark is the alternative winner of a college scholarship which could be his if the current winner doesn’t choose to major in a drama program after high school. “I’d like to attend a 4 year college, doubling in Theater and Education,” he said.

“It is no surprise to me that Mark Wilburn won gold,” noted drama teacher Kerri Cooper. “He is as dedicated as he is talented and puts his heart and soul into everything.” Mark has a history of competition wins, having taken silver at NETC two years ago, and winning 2 All-Star Cast Awards at last year’s Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild (METG).

Although Mark Wilburn began acting with a small part at the Gordon W. Mitchell Middle School in East Bridgewater, it hasn’t always been his passion. “I came to Southeastern for the Design and Visual Communications (DVC) program, and during freshman exploratory I got to also experience Performing Arts and Graphic Communication. When I cycled through Performing Arts, I was asked to work technical for a production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. I really liked it and decided to pursue acting. “

As a freshman, Mark played Henry in “A Little Piece of Heaven”, played the male lead of Billy in “Fortress” and narrated The Complete History of America (abridged) as a sophomore, played an ensemble role his junior year in “Just Another High School Play” as well as the role of Chris in “Alias” the student directed show.

The public is invited to see Mark Wilburn’s work at the 3rd Annual Arts Appreciation Night at Southeastern Regional on February 13, 2014. “Jack Hamelburg (of Brockton) and I will be directing ‘The Actors Nightmare.’” The co-directors will continue the tradition and good reputation of past student directed shows at the high school. Plans are also formulating for a public performance of “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” in May.

Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School is a public 9-12 vocational high school located in South Easton, Massachusetts, serving approximately 1,277 students from the city of Brockton and the towns of East Bridgewater, Easton, Foxborough, Mansfield, Norton, Sharon, Stoughton, and West Bridgewater.
