Southeastern Regional’s Senior Connects Criminal Justice Studies with Her Love for Animals

Alexis Eartbeway of Brockton, a senior at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School, put a lot of thought into fulfilling her community service project requirement based on her Criminal Justice major. “I wanted a project that would combine my career studies with my love of animals, so I began searching online for community services involving animals. I found Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog, and decided to raise funds to help purchase bullet proof jackets and first aid kids for police dogs,” she said. “My goal should be reachable with the fundraising events I’m planning.

But Alexis needed a team for her ambitious project. Fellow Criminal Justice majors and Brockton residents Adrianna Dougherty and Rosebely Mejia stepped up to help. Alexis and her team has gone way beyond the 10 hour requirement for a community service project at Southeastern, and projects 50-100 volunteer hours per person by the end of the project. My Criminal Justice program teacher, Mr. Bohning, has recommended I also bring the project to the SkillsUSA competition.”

Beginning early last September, Alexis has both participated in community fundraisers and organized original fundraisers at the high school along with her team, getting the word out through the school’s morning announcements, posters and word of mouth. “We held balloon pop competitions for the different vocational programs at Southeastern on two Friday’s in early February, and held a Valentine’s Day bake sale. We are tallying results now, so the program that donated the most money will enjoy the prize of either a pizza party or breakfast of their choice.”

The vocational program competitions are over, but the fundraising continues. Alexis and her team have already raised enough money to purchase and donate a first-aid kit to a canine unit to help dogs injured in the line of duty.

Having turned 18, Alexis plans to apply for community service at the MSPCA (Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). “I will do whatever I can to get into college, but I’m also enjoying what I’m doing. I’m an overachiever in doing what I’m passionate about, and what I plan to do in my future. At Southeastern, I study laws to forensics in Criminal Justice. I learned a lot of what I want to do in the future. I’m already learning what we’re going to learn in a college Criminal Justice program, advanced theories and legal practices, so I’ll start out with a good knowledge base,” Alexis said. “Southeastern Regional has given me a great head start in my career.”
