Oliver Ames Softball Falls to Weymouth in Regular Season Finale

The Oliver Ames softball team let its guard down for one inning Friday afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, that meant the difference in the game.

The Tigers let up five runs to Weymouth in the fifth, and fell to the Wildcats 5-3 in their regular season finale in back of .

"I tell them all the time, you’ve got to keep your peddle to the metal and as soon as you let off the gas someone's going to come in and take it from you," OA coach Lindsey Allison said. "They came in and took it away."

The Tigers led early in the game after a Jackie Healy RBI single drove in Makayla Leite in the second inning. But, with no security runs, OA saw the lead disappear quickly.

Two infield singles and a bunt off of OA pitcher Elizabeth Batsinelas loaded the bases for Weymouth in the top of the fifth. An RBI single from Michelle Cronin, an errant throw off a Abby Lisinko ground ball and a two-run double from Sarah Finnigan put Weymouth in the driver's seat for the rest of the game.

"They just started to catch up a little bit to the pitcher," Allison said. "They were hungry for hits and they got them. They laid down a couple good bunts at good times."

Although the Tigers put together a small rally and scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th behind timely hitting and baserunning from Jackie Healy, Nicole Cosgrove, Lexi Soucie and Hayley Allen, it wasn't enough.

With tournament seedings scheduled for Tuesday, Allison said that the seventh inning proves the Davenport Division champs are a feisty team.

"These kids are hungry," she said. "They never give up."

Now at 10-10 overall, the Tigers will work on fundamentals to prepare for the second season.

"We need to work on baserunning and keeping heads up to make sure that lead runner scores," Allison said. "The defense is pretty solid. There’s some short hops in the outfield that we could work on getting those sliding catches in. Other than that, it’s communication and staying together and making sure we’re there for each other every play."
