Mansfield-Oliver Ames Girls' Hockey vs. Franklin w 4-3

What a great way to end the season as M/OA defeated Franklin at home 4-3.  The girls had a strong 3 period performance coupled with solid goaltending from keeper Shannon Connolly.

The M/OA girls jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Nora Maclaine in the first period.  Franklin would answer in the second but it was short lived.  Maclaine scored again unassisted to put the M/OA girls up by one.  With 16 seconds left in the period M/OA forward Jacqui Podolski would add to the lead going into the locker room after 2 periods winning 3-1.  In the third Franklin would once again answer with a quick goal to bring them within 1 but Jamie Gottwald found the back of the net to make it 4-2 with 10 minutes to play.  M/OA found itself in penalty trouble and the Franklin Panthers had a great opportunity to get back in the game.  They managed to score on a deflection to cut the lead to 4-3 but to no avail,  the M/OA girls would not be denied and secured the victory.  Final score 4-3

“The team finished the season with a 3-1-1 record in the final 5 games.  It was a great ending to the season for a program that is really starting to come into its own.   The players and coaching staff should be proud of their efforts.  They deserve the respect they have gained.” – Coach O’Heir

Mansfield-Oliver Ames Girls' Hockey vs Whitman-Hanson T 3-3

  • The re-match was on tonight between 2 evenly matched teams, Whitman/Hanson and Mansfield/Oliver Ames.  M/OA won the first game of the series but with a tournament berth on the line the Whitman/Hanson girls came out to play game 2 with a purpose.  They quickly went up 1-0 with a nice goal from Jane Morrisette and that is how it stood after the 1st.  The M/OA girls scrambled early in the 2nd to try to counter but the pressure from the W/H team wouldn’t allow them to get anything going.   W/H quickly took advantage and captain Michaela McIsaac scored to put them up 2-0.  M/OA would get a man advantage when the W/H team was called for a trip.  With the powerplay unit on the ice the M/OA girls cut the lead in half when Nora Maclaine(26th) scored on a rebound of Victoria O’Heir slapshot.  This got the blood flowing for the M/OA girls and before the 2nd period expired Victoria O’Heir(24th) scored to tie the game at 2.  In the third it appeared that the M/OA momentum would continue when W/H was called for a cross-check in the first minute of play.  The W/H penalty kill turned this opportunity into a nightmare for M/OA when Jane Morrisette would capitalize on a loose puck at their blue line and score a pretty shorthanded goal to put the W/H team up 3-2.  The next 10 minutes or so in the third produced some great up and down action but M/OA forward Kerra Anastasia would get the equalizer with less than 5 minutes to play when she found a loose puck in front and popped it home to tie the game at 3.  With their tournament hopes on the line and needing a win to advance the W/H coach pulled the goaltender with a little over a minute to play but the M/OA girls held on not allowing a single shot on net.  Final score M/OA 3 – W/H 3.

OA-Mansfield Girls' Hockey vs. St. Joseph w 5-0

Tonight the M/OA girls dominated the St. Joseph prep team with a solid 3 period effort.  Despite solid goaltending from St. Joes the M/OA girls worked the puck relentlessly in the offensive zone with great passing and puck possession.  It wasn’t long before one finally made it thorough when Nora Maclaine found the top corner with a pretty wrist shot to put M/OA up 1-0 after the first.  In the second M/OA continued its attack and knotted 2 more with goals by Jamie Gottwald (7th) and Victoria O’Heir (20th).  In the third St. Joe’s came out flying, as expected, but the relentless pressure combined with the excellent defensive protection gave them few good scoring opportunities.  Shannon Connolly was up to the task between the pipes and as time started to work against the opponent Nora Maclaine went to work scoring 2 more (21st and 22nd) to seal the deal.   Final score M/OA 5 St. Joseph Prep 0.

Mansfield/Oliver Ames Girls' Hockey vs. Westwood L 6-2

  • The M/OA girls fell to a very strong, talented Westwood squad tonight 6-2.  The M/OA girls seemed to get better, however, as the game progressed led by an outstanding goaltending effort by Shannon Connolly.  After falling behind 4-0 after the first period, the girls tightened up their defense in the second but were not able to fully contain the potent Westwood attack.  They went into the locker room after 2 down 6-0.  To some this may have been enough to concede but our girls came out in the 3rd and not only held their opponent scoreless but managed to find the back of the net twice with goals by Victoria O’Heir (14th) and Katelynn Arnold (1st).    “It was a great display of character and determination," Mansfield/OA coach Patrick O'Heir said.

  • M/OA jumped out to a quick lead in the first period at the :20 second mark and they looked like they came to play.  The 2 teams battled back and forth and at the end of 1 the game was tied 2-2.  The second period Dover/Sherborn carried the play and went ahead and it looked like they were headed into the locker room after 2 with a 3-2 lead until M/OA caught a break and tied the game with a minute or so to play.  So after 2 it was anyone’s game.  The M/OA girls worked hard in the 3rd period led by a fantastic effort from forward Jamie Gottwald.  The jumped out to a 5-3 lead with less than 4 minutes to play.  D/S was able to get a quick one to narrow the lead but the M/OA girls outworked D/S in the final 3 minutes of the game to secure the win 5-4
