This week in Agriculture

In a recent interview, USDA Secretary Tom Visack said, "Farmers markets are an important public face for agriculture and a critical part of our nation's food system. They provide benefits not only to the farmers looking for important income opportunities, but also help fill a growing consumer demand for fresh, healthy foods."

According to the USDA’s National Farmers Market Directory list, there are more than 8,144 farmers markets, an increase from about 5,000 in 2008. This week, celebrate National Farmers Market Week by visiting your favorite market, the one that has been running for 14 years in Easton.
This week, the Original Easton Farmers Market will be celebrating in full force. The kids’ corner will be open this Saturday offering a fun Lantern Making Workshop. The Bring an empty soda, juice or water bottle and learn how to transform ordinary, plastic bottles into fabulous lanterns! It is an easy, eco-friendly craft that can be made by children of all ages! Don’t miss out on these illuminating, colorful creations!
This activity is just in time with only two weeks left before Easton’s Lantern Parade, held on Saturday, August 17th! Participants will meet at 6:00 p.m. at the Historical Society. Then you can march with your lanterns decorated at the farmers market from the Historical Society to the back of the Ames Free Library-Queset Garden on August 17th. Just in case of bad weather that day, head to Oakes Ames Memorial Hall. There will be music, children’s entertainment, popcorn, cookies, face painting and it is all FREE!

So come join us at the Original Easton Farmers’ Market, located at the turnaround on Rte 123, Depot Street, near Shaw’s.  It’s open Saturday from 10-2!
