VBC & Flynn's Farm Team up for Holiday Toy Drive

Vagabond CrossFit, in partnership with Flynn’s Family Farm, held a workout and toy drive on December 21st to benefit the Child Life Specialists at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Vagabond CrossFit owner, Kevin O’Malley, was inspired to hold the holiday toy drive by gym members and owners of Flynn’s Family Farm on Bay Road, Sean and Jessy Flynn.  The Flynn’s have been bringing their daughter to Children’s Hospital every month for the past six years to treat a stomach condition and they hold the Child Life Specialist group close to their hearts. Child Life Specialists’ sole purpose is to help kids and families feel more comfortable and less afraid during their stay. They bring toys, books, crafts and blankets to patient’s rooms to make them feel happy and more at ease.  Jessy Flynn says, “When a child is happy, they have a much greater chance of becoming healthy.”

Child Life Specialists enhance patients' emotional, social and cognitive growth during a hospital stay, and help patients and families adjust to and understand the hospital and their medical situation. As professionals trained to work with children in medical settings, each provides individualized support before and after medical procedures.

For two weeks, VBC members brought in hundreds of toys, blankets, games and books. Flynn’s Farm also collected a large amount of toys from their customers while selling Christmas Trees and decorations at the farm on Bay Road. O’Malley and the Flynns will combine their donations and bring everything in to the hospital sometime in the next week.

O’Malley said, “We care about our members and we really wanted to do a toy drive for a special cause this holiday season. The Flynn’s are like family and after hearing about the Child Life Specialists it made total sense. Our gym entryway looked like a toy store by the end of the drive- it’s incredible to see this kind of generosity firsthand.”
