Easton Youths Hold Bake Sale For Japan

A group of Easton 10-year olds held a bake sale outside of Village Toy Shop last week.

After watching the news and talking about the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, 10-year olds Sarah Alexander and Samantha Clapp knew they wanted to do something to help.

“My sister was doing it at the middle school so I decided to do it too,” said Samantha, who, along with her sister Brittney Clapp, and five other friends -- Caitlin Cavanaugh, Sarah Leger, Kayla Lozzi, Anna Vidoni  and Grace Weintrob -- held a bake sale outside the Village last Saturday.

The girls spent two days baking whoopee pies, brownies, Italian cookies, cupcakes and other treats that sold quickly.

“We raised $283.75 in three hours,” said Sarah.  “We’re donating it to AmeriCares because [a lot] of the profits will go to Japan.”

According to americares.org, AmeriCares delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in crisis around the world, and “more than 98 percent of AmeriCares’ total expenses directly support programs and relief for people in need, and less than 2 percent represent administrative and fundraising costs.”

“I thought it was a great idea that they were getting involved,” said Michele Alexander, Sarah’s mother, who helped the girls bake for two days.  “They saw it on the news and learned about it at school, so they brought their friends together, they wanted to do what they could.”

The friends say they are considering another bake sale but have not yet set a date.  In the meantime, the girls hope that people will consider donating on their own.

“People should try to donate a lot of money to help Japan,” said Samantha.   To donate to AmeriCares, click here.
