Despite Protest, Easton Selectmen Approve Four-Town Veterans District

After a heated discussion between selectmen and about a dozen Easton veterans, Selectmen approved a plan to create the Crossroads Veterans Services District.

Easton selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to support an agreement with the towns of Norton, Foxborough and Mansfield to form a four-town veterans district with two full-time veterans agent. The district would be called the Crossroads Veterans Services District. The vote came after a heated discussion with approximately one dozen of Easton's veterans who adamantly disapproved of the district and felt the lack of one full-time agent in Easton would not provide adaquate support for Easton Veterans. The plan, which has been approved by Easton, Norton and Foxboro (Mansfield votes next week) would make Mansfield agent John Hogan and Foxborough agent Michael Johns full-time agents for the four towns. Chestnut Street Fields to be Named for Edwin A. Keach

Selectmen voted unanimously to name the new Chestnut Street complex after Edwin A. Keach.

Selectmen unanimously voted Monday night to name the town's Chestnut Street fields after Edwin A. Keach, who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident in 2003. The town agreed to purchase the property with $2.37 million of Conservation Act Funds at last spring's Town Meeting. Closing is set to take place this fall. "This is something that we want to move forward with because the Keach family would like to purchase the sign for the field and move on with the process," Board of Selectmen Chair Colleen Corona said. Corona said the recreation department didn't vote on the field's naming because there are no regulations or bylaws in place for naming a site. Recreation Department member Tana Babbit was in attendance at the meeting. While…

Fire Study Committee, Selectmen Look for Solutions

Fire Department is understaffed, more than two stations are needed, Fire Study Committee says

Better medical resources for fire vehicles and dispatch staffing patterns will be the top priorities for fire and town officials as they look for better ways to decrease emergency response time in Easton. Officials discussed the issue Monday night when the board of selectmen met with the fire study committee, which determined in its report released this summer that relying on two of the town's three stations was inadequate. "The recommendations in this report are all very important," Board of Selectmen Chair Colleen Corona said. "It’s a recommendation that clearly they need more staffing. It’s an indication that any consideration of a two station system really has to come off the table." Still, the town is facing a budget crunch that …

Easton Officials Discuss Irene Aftermath

Officials commended the work of town emergency officials while questioning the responsiveness of National Grid and looking for ways to improve procedure in the future.

Board of Selectmen members agreed Monday night that the work of Easton's Department of Public Works, Fire Department and Police Department was commendable during Hurricane Irene and its aftermath last week, which resulted in numerous branches down, over 100 calls to emergency officials and loss of power for over 7,000 Easton households. Some members of the board, however, were not pleased with the response from National Grid. "You guys did a great job and I thank you for that," Selectman Todd Gornstein told Fire Chief Tom Stone, DPW Director Wayne Southworth and Police Chief Allen Krajcik. "National grid – their behavior was egregious." Gornstein said that communication between the power company and the town needed to improve in the future…

John Varella gets the nod from selectmen to serve as the Planning and Zoning Board's new alternate.

Corporate and tax lawyer, and longtime Easton resident John Varella was appointed by selectmen this week to serve on the Planning and Zoning Board as an alternate. Varella told selectmen that his background reading codes, specifically in the tax area, could be helpful while serving on the board. "I am very comfortable reading bylaws," Varella said. The selectmen always, every single time, pick a lawyer over the other candidate. Going forward, the Towns application should simply be: Are you a lawyer? (yes) or (no) please circle one.   more ›

Selectmen Appoint New Conservation Commission Member

A local lawyer who serves as a mediator for the state was appointed by the Board of Selectmen.

The Board of Selectmen voted 4-0 with one abstention Monday night to appoint Edward Woods Jr. as a new member to the Conservation Commission. Selectman Dan Murphy, a local accountant, abstained from the vote because he said Woods is a client of his. Woods, who is a mediator employed by the state, said one of his biggest strengths is giving everyone "their day in court." He is a licensed attorney specializing in land use law and real estate. "I believe in giving the people the proper time and giving people the opportunity to speak," he told selectmen during his interview. Woods said the role of the board should be to "protect the environment and serve the public." While he stressed giving everyone a fair chance, he said his experience as a …

UPDATED: Haederle's Departure Brings About More Changes For Board of Selectmen

Selectman John Haederle, who is resigning to take a job in Washington D.C., said farewell at a Selectmen's meeting this week. Daniel Murphy has pulled papers to run for his seat.

Former Selectman John Haederle was honored Monday night during his final meeting at Easton Town Offices by fellow selectmen and State Senator Brian A. Joyce. Haederle opened the meeting with a speech of his own, but was honored throughout the night with two plaques and an emotional farewell. "I feel like I'm at my own funeral," Haederle said.
