Shaw's to be Sold in $3.3 Billion Deal

The owner of Shaw's and Star Market is selling stores to Cerberus Capital Management.

Shaw's and Star Market agreed to sell several stores to Cerberus Capital Management as part of $3.3 billion deal, according to a report in the Boston Globe Thursday. Cerberus Capital Management is a private equity firm that also controls Steward Hospital Health Care System. Supervalu Inc. of Minnesota owns Shaw's and Star Market and is expect to sell 169 stores as part of the deal for $100 million in cash, while Cerberus will assume $3.2 billion in existing debt the Globe reports. While the Boston Herald wrote "no immediate changes are planned for the West Bridgewater-based Shaw’s and Star Market grocery chains," the paper reported the deal "prompted speculation that some Shaw’s and Star Markets could return to the block after the deal …

Good riddens to them. I can get $90.00 worth of groceries at Market basket rather than $43.00 at Shaws. They are very expensive. The quality of their food is sub standard. I've bought three loaves of bread from the one in Stoughton, and two days later they are full of mold. God forbid you go to the deli and ask for something while the employees are talking about their personal lives. They are not…   more ›

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: College Tuition [Poll]

Does something need to be done about the rising price of college tuition?

Yesterday, in President Obama's budget plan, he outlined an initiative to rein in the cost of college tuition, which he says is too high. His plan would not subsidize colleges that continue to raise the price of tuition. The federal government, he said, “can’t just keep on subsidizing skyrocketing tuition,’’ which has roughly doubled the pace of inflation in recent years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Kids and Body Piercings

Should children under 18 be allowed to get body piercings without being accompanied by a parent or guardian?

We'll be asking Easton Patch readers a different question every weekday. Questions could range from local decisions made by officials, to state issues, to national politics and entertainment. Whatever it is, we want to know what EASTON thinks! A new bill is being considered in the state legislature that would bar children under 18 from getting body piercings without permission from a parent or legal guardian, according to a Boston Globe report. The bill is expected to be heard tomorrow. Massachusetts is one of only 20 states that does not have laws restricting minors from receiving body piercings. Should children under 18 be allowed to get body piercings without being accompanied by a parent or guardian?

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Whitey Bulger's Tipster

Should Whitey Bulger's tipster's identity have been revealed?

We'll be asking Easton Patch readers a different question every weekday. Questions could range from local decisions made by officials, to state issues, to national politics and entertainment. Whatever it is, we want to know what EASTON thinks! The Boston Globe reported last week the identity of the woman who tipped off the FBI former mob boss Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend Catherine Greig's whereabouts. Now, former prosecuters are saying that identifying the woman, former Miss Iceland Anna Bjornsdottir, may put her in danger and prevent other witnesses from coming forward in similar situations. Should Whitey Bulger's tipster's identity have been revealed?

Muscato's Musings

Smarten Up – Let's Be Grateful, America

On the whole, we got it good here.

We need a little more gratitude out there. So many of us are so blessed and so fortunate and yet we – and that includes me – fail to take inventory of all that we have.  This column and this place on the web have provided me a lot of enjoyment and fulfillment and reward. Right at the top of all those pluses is the community of discussion and reflection about how, for so many of us – whether we came from a family of modest means or not – there was tremendous levels of fun, blessings, and fortune in growing up in Easton.   We are grateful.   But I see and listen to so much complaining and moaning out there. Now, I don’t want to deprive anybody any of this activity – and no matter how sweet things are in our lives, it is tough not to do all …

I do thank you for the supportive comments. It has been interesting to read similar views as expressed above, and to have read them in the comments section of other local, area Patch.com columns. There were (3) interesting "Summer Reads" that I finished reading the other day; brand new books that I returned to The Ames Free Library-Children's Section: 1) William J.
