Proposed Foxboro Casino Concerns Sharon Resident Matthew Baldassari sees a casino on Route 1 in Foxboro as drawing bad things to Sharon, where he has resided since the mid-1980s. "You're going to see traffic and you're going to see crime go up" in Sharon, Baldassari said Monday. Although Wynn Resorts' proposed casino site is in Foxboro, residents of neighboring communities are joining the fight against it, says Chris Lowery, No Foxboro Casino's volunteer coordinator. Foxboro residents are driving this volunteer effort. "This is a regional issue. It will affect the whole area," Lowery says. Did Foxborough selectmen make the right decision last night?

Wednesday, December 28, 2011
Last night, the Foxborough Board of Selectmen voted 3-2 to draft a letter to Governor Deval Patrick, the state gaming commission, and Bob Kraft and Steve Wynn saying they would not support a casino in Foxborough. Arguments were made for both sides. While proponents think it would bring jobs to the town, opponents cited traffic issues and decreased property values. If Easton was in a similar situation, how would you want our selectmen to vote? Do you think Foxborough selectmen made the right decision?

Opponents and proponents of a proposed $1 billion casino lined Route 1 Monday at Patriot Place in Foxborough with signs in hand. The demonstrators arrived in response to news last week that Patriots owner Robert Kraft is in discussion with Las Vegas developer Steve Wynn about building the casino on approximately 200 acres across from Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place, just over 10 miles from the center of Easton. Would you support the construction of a casino in Foxborough? What are your concerns? Answer our poll below or tell us in the comments section.

Massachusetts Legislators added an amendment to the proposed casino bill yesterday allowing local bars and restaurants to once again have a "Happy Hour"
Easton's liquor-selling establishments like Maguire's, Doyle's, El Mariachi, LOCO, the Stoneforge and Buddy's Union Villa could be seeing a new marketing opportunity in the near future. An amendment added yesterday to the proposed Massachusetts Casino Bill would bring back "Happy Hour" in Massachusetts, which had been banned since 1984. Currently, Massachusetts law forbids businesses from offering free or discounted alcoholic beverages. The new amendment is an attempt for legislators to give local bars the same ability that casinos have in order to compete.

We'll be asking Easton Patch readers a different question every weekday. Questions could range from local decisions made by officials, to state issues, to national politics and entertainment. Whatever it is, we want to know what EASTON thinks! Massachusetts lawmakers filed a gambling bill yesterday that would allow for three casinos and one separate slot parlor in the commonwealth, according to the Boston Herald and other media outlets. In a statement, House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray said “We support this bill and believe that it provides a strongly regulated and commercially desirable framework for establishing a gaming industry in Massachusetts. Expanded gaming will create thousands of construction and …

Beginning in June, we'll be asking Easton Patch readers a different question every weekday at noon. Questions could range from local decisions made by officials, to state issues, to national politics and entertainment. Whatever it is, we want to know what EASTON thinks! To answer, use our comments section below. Last week, the Cape Cod Times reported that the Mashpee Womponoags were in discussions with the owners of Raynham Park, just over the Easton-Raynham town line, about possible plans to build a casino in Raynham. The tribe had previously eyed land on route 44 in Middleborough and rumors have floated about different locations the Womponoags could create a casino. Easton Board of Selectmen Chair Colleen Corona said the possibility of a…

The Mashpee Womponoags are reportedly in discussion with the owner of the former dog track.
Members of the Mashpee Womponoag Tribe are reportedly in discussion with the owner of the Raynham Park just over the Raynham town line, according to the Cape Cod Times. The Times said "multiple sources" confirmed that park owner George Carney and leaders from the tribe are "in talks." Formerly a 108-acre greyhound race track, the park became an area for simulcast betting in 2008 after dog racing was banned in Massachusetts. The park is located on route 138 south of Easton. Board of Selectmen Chair Colleen Corona expressed concerns regarding traffic and public safety. "A casino located there would certainly impact the intersection of Routes 106 and 138," she said. "I’m concerned about public safety issues with traffic coming out of a casino…
