One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. There were 114 OUI fatalities in Massachusetts in 2012, which were 34 percent of traffic-related fatalities last year, according to Mothers …

The Massachusetts State Police increased patrols on Route 24 and ran a sobriety checkpoint in Norfolk County this Thanksgiving weekend, which resulted in a number of OUI arrests, other offenses and hundreds of citations.
Massachusetts State Police Troopers made 20 OUI arrests and issued almost 350 citations on area roadways this holiday weekend - the result of increased patrols on Routes 24 and 195 and a sobriety checkpoint in Canton, according to a press release from the MSP. The State Police deployed increased patrols on Routes 24 and 195 in southeastern Massachusetts, the evenings of Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24 as "part of the department’s ongoing efforts to curb impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving on those roads," the MSP stated in a press release. Easton Police arrested a Stoughton woman for drunk driving Sunday night on Bay Road. Kimberly Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton was arrested for operating under the influence after being pulled over at approximately 10:22 p.m. She was later released on $40 bail. An Easton man was arrested Saturday night for his third offense of drunk driving after he crashed into seven parked vehicles in the Elise Circle parking lot. John T. O’Loughlin, 56, of 26 Elise Circle was charged with drunk driving (3rd offense) and operating to endanger, Police Chief Allen Krajcik said. O'Loughlin allegedly started his pick-up truck and accelerated when he tried to hit the brakes, smashing into seven parked vehicles, Krajcik said. There were no injuries. Krajcik said police responded at approximately 9 p.m.when callers reported the incident.

A Stoughton man was arrested Wednesday for his fourth offense of drinking and driving after a pursuit that led Easton Police into Stoughton. David Brodt, 47, of 128 Lake Drive, Stoughton, was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol- fourth offense, operating to endanger, failing to stop for an officer and speeding. The incident was one of many breaking and entering incidents over the weekend.
A smashed window at Parkview School over the long weekend sent Easton police and detectives to the scene Monday morning to investigate an alleged breaking and entering incident. Police first received a call at approximately 10 a.m. Monday regarding a broken window in the rear of the building with back door propped open. When officers arrived, they confirmed the calls and investigated the building to be sure trespassers were not present. The matter is under investigation by the Easton Police Department.
