Proceeds from the restaurant's annual holiday party were donated to the Easton Food Pantry
When Maguire's owners Pat Connell, Michael Sullivan and Neil Levine got together in the fall to discuss their annual holiday party, they wanted to do something more this time around. "This year we said, 'let's do something nice'," Levine said. ".. This is the time of year to think instead of buying things, maybe we should give back." Each year, Connell, Sullivan and Levine invite their most loyal customers to an evening of free food and a cash bar. This year, the proceeds from the cash bar went to the Easton Food Pantry. Levine cut a check Sunday night as the holiday party wound down and it was delivered first thing Monday morning. "The food pantry just does a tremendous job," Levine said. "It's a good local group and this time of year …

The Easton organization is prepared to cater to the pre-Thanksgiving crowd.
Easton Food Pantry founder Ken Wood said Monday and Tuesday next week are expected to be the two busiest days in the program's history. But, as always, the 34-year-old organization will be fully prepared. "Nobody should be left out without some help," he said. "We should be able to do it." Wood said he expects the pre-Thanksgiving crowd to number 160 families. Last year, the Easton Food Pantry served 130 families for the major distribution day. In 2010, 90 families were served, and 70 were served in 2009. "The part time jobs just aren’t cutting it," Wood said. "And now, this time of year we’re going to start getting elders because they have a choice between medicine, heat and food. So, they’re not going to give up their medicine and they’…

Submitted to Easton Patch: On August 6 the Easton Chamber of Commerce president, Michael Asack, presented a check for $1,500 to the Easton Food Pantry. The donation represents a portion of the proceeds from the Taste of Easton held in May. The Food Pantry provides food for any Easton resident in need regardless of income. Pantry items and monetary donations are contributed by Easton residents, schools, churches, and other in-town businesses and organizations. Additionally in the summer months, locally grown seasonal vegetables are donated for distribution. There are over 20 community volunteers who gather on Mondays to help sort and distribute the food to the families. The Easton Food Pantry currently serves close to 60 families per …

Submitted to Easton Patch: North Easton Savings Bank held its third annual drive to benefit the food pantries in Easton, Norton, Mansfield and North Attleboro. Responding to reports that the number of families requiring assistance was increasing dramatically, employees, trustees and corporators were asked to bring donations to the North Easton Savings Bank office at 20 Eastman Street, South Easton. The response was even greater than last year. In the spirit of giving, overflowing bags of non-perishable food items, paper goods and toiletries were collected. Even with this effort, the local pantries are still reporting that their shelves are far from full and even more families than last year are in desperate need of assistance. The …

But On The Whole In Easton It Isn't That Bad – Everything Is Relative – Let's Put Things In Perspective
We learn early on – or at least we should learn early on – to be discerning and that everything is relative. During times of plenty and the good life, things irritate and send us skyward that during far more difficult times don’t even register as trifling inconveniences or minor problems. After tough times and tough situations, we appreciate things we may not have appreciated prior to knowing the adversity and hardship. I love that line – the one that honors our armed forces and their sacrifices and efforts; here it is: “For those who fought for it, freedom has a taste the protected will never know.” Back in 1994, I sat talking with Ross Bridge at his home on Western Avenue. I was talking to him about the Battle of the Bulge, which he …

Submitted to Easton Patch On what turned out to be one of the nicest days of the summer, the Easton Country Club opened its doors to a day of "free golf" in honor of the club's 50th anniversary last Thursday. The day began with a breakfast meeting for the Easton Chamber of Commerce members followed by golf for anyone wishing to hit the links. During the breakfast, general manager Mark Lombardi gave a brief history of the course from when it began as a nine hole course to where it is today as an eighteen hole course with a clubhouse and a function room facility "We are extremely pleased with the turn out today," commented Lombardi, "And, it's nice to see all the golfers who have supported us throughout the years and some new faces as …

The third generation family business is celebrating with Easton Appreciation Day this Thursday.
Last Spring, Easton Country Club General Manager Mark Lombardi held a gathering for club members - many of whom had been golfing at the course for over 30 or 40 years. The celebration marked a milestone - the beginning of Easton Country Club's 50th golf season. While the celebration was for the club's paying customers, Lombardi, whose family has owned the golf course since its inception, said it was like a family gathering. "Sometimes they can tell us more historical facts than we remember," he said. "Just seeing the golf course change and grow over the years, and different family members come and go. They remember my grandmother who lived on the course and worked in the proshop. She was a perfectionist and they would tell stories of her …
