Carroll Named Permanent Principal For Easton Middle School

The former assistant principal has served in the role on an interim basis since the retirement of John Giuggio.

Easton Middle School interim principal Luke Carroll will drop the "interim" from his title, Easton Superintendent Michael Green announced Thursday night. "Last spring we appointed Mr. Carroll as the interim principal of the middle school," Green told the School Committee. "Luke has certainly done an outstanding job and since then we have heard nothing but good things from staff and parents alike." Carroll will take over permanently for John Giuggio, who retired last year after 10 1/2 years in the Easton Public School system and over 40 years as an educator. Carroll served under Giuggio as the assistant principal at Easton Junior High School/Easton Middle School since 2004. "I think we’re very fortunate to have Luke," School Committee …

Patch Q&A: New Easton Middle School Interim Principal Luke Carroll

Patch recently sat down with Luke Carroll, the interim principal at EMS

How long have you been an educator? I was a history teacher at Randolph High School and eventually I was the assistant principal at Randolph High School for three years. I was in Randolph altogether for about 10. I left Randolph to take the assistant principal job here when it was Easton Junior High School. Shortly after I arrived was the start of the construction project, which was a three year project throughout this building. So, I’ve been here since 2004. Although I’m new to this position, I’m not new to this district. Are you an Easton resident? I live in Easton. I lived in Easton since before I worked here. I used to be an offensive line coach at Stonehill when I was a history teacher at Randolph.  At the time I lived in Canton and…

Mazzola to Take Over as Principal for Both Olmsted and Richardson for 2012-2013 School Year

Frank Rich will act as interim assistant principal under Mazzola. Michael Ciliberto was named as the interim assistant principal of Easton Middle School

F.L. Olmsted principal Dr. Gary Mazzola will be taking on a heavier workload in the fall. When current H.H. Richardson Principal Donna Tobin leaves next year to pursue a new job in Westwood, Mazzola will take over as the principal for both schools. Frank Rich, who had been a 6th grade teacher in the Easton Public School System for nine years before going on leave, will work with Mazzola as the interim assistant principal. Currently, under Mazzola and Tobin, neither school has an assistant principal. Rich has a masters degree in curriculum instruction and an advanced graduate degree in educational leadership, Superintendent Dr. Michael Green said. "Our plan is to replace Donna Tobin by having Dr. Mazzola as the principal of both Olmsted and…

Giuggio Guided Easton Middle School Through Time of Transition

Retiring EMS principal will miss students, teachers and parents.

Over the last decade, the building on Columbus Avenue formerly known as Easton Junior High School has been a place where change is common. Walls have been knocked down and reconstructed, temporary trailers have come and gone, grade levels have changed, and faculty and staff members have transitioned from a Junior High School to a Middle School curriculum and mindset. One constant, though, has been the principal. John Giuggio, who took over as Easton Junior High School Principal in 2002, has bared witness and facilitated more change to his school than most administrators could comprehend. Beginning next year, though, the school will be with a new leader for the first time in over a decade. Giuggio announced his retirement earlier this year …

Richardson Principal To Take Job in Westwood

Donna Tobin will move on to a Westwood Elementary School. She is the second principal to leave Easton's school system next year, along with Easton Middle School Principal John Giuggio.

Come Fall 2012, students at Martha Jones Elementary in Westwood will have a new principal at the helm - and she's coming from Easton. Selected among three finalists by Westwood School officials last week, Donna Tobin will fill the role once held by former principal Peggy Scott effective July 1. Her resignation as the H.H. Richardson principal will officially be announced at this Thursday's school committee meeting. "I'm extremely excited about coming to Westwood," Tobin told Patch. "I'm looking forward to working with the administrative team, the teachers, the students and the parents." Tobin has been the principal for Richardson for the past two years. Previously, she was an elementary teacher in Milton, according to a letter Westwood …

HUGS Walk Particiapants Raised $19,000 Last Weekend

The annual walk raised awareness and money against family violence.

More than 100 volunteers raised $19,000 by participating in the The HUGS (Help Us Get Safe) 13th Annual Walk for Family Safety walk last Saturday. The volunteers enjoyed walking three miles on a warm, sunny day through Historic North Easton Village.  The proceeds will go towards helping victims of domestic violence in the Easton area.  Easton Police Officer Denise Papagno, who is the HUGS II President, said she appreciated all the hard work of the volunteers. “It is a community wide effort, and I appreciate their support, because it allows us to help all the families in need,” she said. HUGS is a non- profit 5013c organization that is committed to eliminating family violence in Easton through awareness, education, early intervention and …

Administrators Happy With Start to School Year

Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent toured schools on first day

When students walked into Easton schools on Sept. 6, the day after Labor Day, school administrators said it was as if they had never left. "We had a very smooth opening," Superintendent Michael Green said at a school committee meeting last week. The first day of school was smooth despite the after-effects of Hurricane Irene, Green said, which left all of the buildings except Center School without power just one day before opening. Luckily, power was restored in the nick of time. Green said he and Assistant Superintendent Cathy MacLeod went to each of the seven schools in the district on the first day to see how students were adjusting to the new year. In each building, students and teachers were well acclimated. "We were able to see each …

Easton Middle School: 'An Incredibly Positive Atmosphere'

A large sixth grade highlights the beginning of the '11-'12 academic year at EMS

When Easton Middle School Principal John Giuggio addressed a group of fresh-faced sixth graders Thursday at their orientation, he was well-aware of just how many students he was talking to. "We have the largest sixth grade in the building that we’ve had in a long time," he said. "345 kids in grade six. That’s quite a large number. We have a total of 947 students in the school." While the number seems large, Giuggio said he is well adapted to dealing with sixth grade students and teachers. The school is now in it's third year of being a "middle school" as opposed to "junior high." Now in his tenth year as principal, he spent the first seven years dealing with older students. "I’d say we’ve made the transition," he said. "This is our third …

It Figures: Easton By The Numbers, Part II

More Numbers and Facts from Easton History

Here I submit an encore to my March 23 “It Figures: Easton By The Numbers” column.”  On Wednesday, I was at the MacPhaidin Library at Stonehill College, availing myself to the digital Boston Globe and New York Times archives that go back to the late 1800s.  I had a lot of fun, and found in those sources many interesting numbers and facts from Easton history, some of which I share here (also shared here are numbers and facts from other sources): 10:15.18: Minutes and seconds which the Oliver Ames High School team of Chris Johnson, Steve Santoro, Seth Clark, and Andy Powell ran, in 1999, the indoor distance medley relay –a performance which was three seconds off the national record set by St. Bernard’s of New Jersey in 1983.   150: Number of…

Life Coach Visits Easton Middle School

Jeff Yalden visited Easton Middle School Last Month

Submitted to Easton Patch On Friday May 13, 2011, Life Coach and speaker Jeff Yalden visited the Easton Middle School and shared stories and encouraging remarks with all of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students there. During his one hour address, Jeff Yalden made clear his mantra "Fill Your Cup" and "Take Time to Think". He talked to the students on their level, in their language, speaking and sharing stories that were personal but monumental - stories about his relationship with his daughter, about his relationship with his grandfather leading up to his death, and his relationship with his autistic nephew and the simple ways to make another happy. His whole message was about the taking time for others, thinking about your actions, and …
