Thanks for the info, Patrick. Looks as if FEEE organizers/members/promoters are really getting citizens behind them for some needed resources for kids and teachers. AND, they're using some terrific sounding, fun events to fund their cause. Bravo!   more ›

School Budget Still Faces Many Unknowns, Superintendent Says

A number of factors have yet to be determined for the FY13 School Budget

Easton Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael A. Green had very little new news concerning the school’s budget at the March 1 Easton School Committee meeting. “We still have a number of factors not yet decided that will directly impact our ability to close or not close our budget gap,” Green said. One of those factors will be having to deal with the expiring contracts of the school unions. The contracts of all six unions are set to expire either at the end of the school year or in August. Negotiations with the teacher's union for a new agreement to take effect in September are expected to begin later this month. Despite the uncertainties, Green is optimistic that the budget will begin to take shape soon. “At this point in time there are…

Muscato's Musings

The Sounds Of Easton

Crickets, Bullfrogs, Metal Tipped Cleats, Air Horns, and More

A light-hearted moment. Back on a summer evening in 2001, I was at a fundraiser for State Sen. Stephen Lynch (D-Boston) that my brother and his wife were hosting outdoors on the patio behind their home on Partridge Way down in North Easton Village.  It was an event to raise money for Lynch’s campaign in a special election for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.  (It has to be noted that the seat for which Sen. Lynch was running had been held for close to 30 years by Joe Moakley, a saint of a man, who had served with extraordinary passion and hard work for the people of Massachusetts, and our nation. Rep. Moakley passed away on May 28, 2001 from a blood disease; he was 74 years old.) Now, for sure, this section of town where my …

Ross, thanks for your great (and truly accurate) recollection of the sounds of OA football games at Frothingham. As a young boy, the sound of the OA player's cleats and their loud chanting scared the living hell oout of me. I can only imagine how it affected their opponents. And Putt Santos ... Easton's very own Keith Jackson. I'll never forget him. Or his distinctive voice.   more ›

A box or two of grass seed to improve the HHRichardson & Olmstead Schools playground would go a long way toward improving the grass playground area, and expanding it a bit into far more usable space. Enough pavement, a bit more grass play area near the basketball court(s)...where the hard-pact dirt currently is.   more ›

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Advertising in Schools

Should public schools increase revenue by selling advertisements?

We'll be asking Easton Patch readers a different question every weekday. Questions could range from local decisions made by officials, to state issues, to national politics and entertainment. Whatever it is, we want to know what EASTON thinks! The Huffington Post reported today that a school in Colorado has begun selling advertisement space on report cards to a nonprofit education savings plan to help close a $70 million budget gap. According to HuffPo, it is one example of school districts facing budget restraints selling advertisements, including a bus advertisement campaign in New Jersey. In Easton, schools were forced to make $900,000 worth of cuts last year to deal with a $1.75 million town budget gap. The cuts eliminated 18 positions…

@ Breeze McIntosh, yes I was confused by your humor. And I agree with you, there are some very nice articles on http://www.EastBayRi.com -and the Tiverton/LittleComptonPatch.com. If you find ideas above that help the Tiverton schools, feel free to consider them. Easton plays Tiverton in baseball, as they did this past summer at Frothingham Park...a game I attended. The View From Here

The Camel: A Horse Designed By A Committee!

The columnist responds to the actions of the Easton School Committee and what he sees as diminishing standards and expectations for our children.

Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students and enthusiastic parents with high expectations. ~ Bob Beauprez  Okay, let me see if I have this straight. According to an article on Nov. 4 in Easton Patch, the Easton School Committee, in its collective wisdom, has appointed an exploratory committee to look into the impact of changing start times for Easton Public Schools.  This action, as stated in the article, was prompted by concerns that high school kids learning capabilities may be adversely impacted by the fact that they may not be getting enough sleep.  Okay, that makes sense. It’s fairly obvious that lack of sleep affects most of us unfavorably. I understand that completely. But does it really …

Lazy parents make lazy kids. Irresponsible parents raise irresponsible kids! Look at the parents if you want to see what's wrong with today's kids! Don't confuse parenting with friendship! IF you LOVE your children you SHOULD WANT them to achieve and be willing to TEACH them how to do that! Let their 'friends' be their own age!! Amen.   more ›

Question of the Day: School Start Times

Should school start times for high school students be later?

We'll be asking Easton Patch readers a different question every weekday. Questions could range from local decisions made by officials, to state issues, to national politics and entertainment. Whatever it is, we want to know what EASTON thinks! Citing studies that suggest adolescents and teens have difficulty learning early in the morning, the Easton School Committee agreed last week to create an exploratory committee that would investigate the pros and cons of changing start times at Easton Public Schools (Read about it here). While the exploratory committee would look into advantages, certain practical effects like after school activities and bus times could come into play. Currently, Oliver Ames High School (grades 9-12) and Easton …

@Maribel Ibrahim - I think you need to have consideration for the student-athlete(s) schedule, in your comments above. And also students who are traveling on buses for jazz band concerts and the like. Basically, all OA-students with travel commitments...and their parents work-life-balance schedules.   more ›
