Honoring and Learning about the Wampanoag and all Peoples Here Before the White Man
There has been a lot of discussion in the news recently about Native American ancestry. I’m not going to go much into the politics of the matter now. Sen. Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren – and their camps – can hash that out. It all gets me thinking, though, that we should on the whole in society pay a lot more attention to the First People of this land, and learn about them and their history, laud their culture and accomplishments, and recognize the extraordinary and unfathomable hurt and persecution and injustice visited on them. Back on May 10, a “Muscato’s Musings” column ran which was a Mother’s Day tribute to my mom. My mother thought it was important that her children appreciated the First People of what would become America…

Led by Candace Steadmans' triple jump school record, OA had a strong showing on the afternoon.
For the 10th year in the row, the Mansfield Hornets took home the boys’ Hockomock League Track and Field Championships. Finishing with an impressive 155.5 points, the defending state champions took first place in 10 of 17 events in a dominating performance at Oliver Ames High School Thursday afternoon and evening. “Every year its different because the kids are different. The team dynamics are different so its fun every year,” Mansfield coach Julie Collins said. Coming out on top in one of the more competitive years for the distance events was Josh Lampron who scored a pair of wins in the mile (4:23.98) and 800 (1:53.89) for the Hornets. In the sprints Brian Ferreira took home the title in the 110 hurdlers (14.98) while Griffin Robertson …

Both teams looking to build off momentum from this past winter.
After capturing the Hockomock League championships this winter, the Oliver Ames girls’ track coach Mike Darling sees similar success for the Lady Tigers this spring. Many members from winter, including Basia Osborone, Olivia Milieka, Emily Newman Michaela Lievi Laura Daley, Michaela Nichols (an individual indoor league champion in the high-jump), and tri-captains Kristi Kent, Shannon Hickey and Emily Grotz, return. The team also welcomes several newcomers that include Candace Steadman, Allie Brennan, Lindsey McNeice and Erin McCarthy, just to name a few. That combination alone gives Darling another reason for optimism. “These girls are focused,” he said. “Many of them who are participating in spring right now, did indoor and they brought…

The Tigers beat the Hornets, 4-2 Saturday.
The Oliver Ames hockey team won one for the Davenport Division Saturday afternoon at Foxborough Sports Center. The Tigers beat Kelly-Rex Division Mansfield, 4-2 in the Hockomock Crossver game. The win also created strong momentum for the 12-4-3 Tigers as they prepare for the State Tournament. "People were saying we get no respect," OA coach Jim Sullivan said. "Well, you don’t get respect unless you play well. If you lose to teams that you should have beaten it comes back to haunt you, so today was a good win" The Tigers came out firing in the first period. After Mansfield Captain Mike Blackman put the Hornets ahead at the 9:07 mark off an assist from fellow Captain Steve Folan, OA's Ryan McGrath answered with a goal 17 seconds later. …

Lady Tigers earn first indoor league title since 2008; Boys finish fifth.
For the first time since 2008, the Oliver Ames girls’ track team was crowned Hockomock Champions after finishing first at the annual league event held Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. But there’s a vast difference in comparison between the two teams. During the 2008 run, a veteran laden OA squad had several first place finishes en route to its first indoor Hock title in school history. Four years later, a young OA squad won only one event, but had several top five finishes and compiled 68 points; 14 ahead of second place Franklin “The last time we won in 2008 we had a lot of talent from our senior class and had several individual champions,” head coach Mike Darling recalled. “This year we were a lot younger and we finished …

Kiivone Howard and Liz Holmes both take titles in the boys 300 and the girls 1000. Brendan Sullivan earns second place in the boys mile.
When it comes to league track meets its takes a substantial amount of depth to win a championship. With depth that no one in the Hockomock League can match, the Mansfield boys are not like any other team. “I think we could get in the 80s so for them to rack up 99 points just one point away from triple digits is just amazing,” Mansfield head coach Julie Collins said. Winning their 11th Hockomock League meet in a row, the Mansfield boys beat second place North Attleboro by 48 points while Oliver Ames captured the girls title. The Hornets two wins came in the 55 hurdles and the 1,000 run. Josh Lampron led the Hornets in the 1,000 (2:31.62) in a 24 point effort that saw Mansfield take first, third, and fourth in the event. Brian Ferreira …

Despite Nick Bruha achieving the 1,000 point mark for his career, KP earns a thrilling 72-68 win Friday night.
For 32 minutes, the Nixon Gymnasium crowd sat on the edge of their seats. In a game that saw several lead changes and Oliver Ames senior tri-captain Nick Bruha (26 points) achieve the 1,000 point mark for his career, the King Philip boys basketball team bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Stoughton and came away with a narrow 72-68 victory Friday night. KP improves to 10-2 (6-2 Hockomock League) and clinches a berth in the state tournament, while OA falls to 7-5 (5-5). “We’ve been in two great high school basketball games the last two nights, and it’s not going to stop,” said KP coach Sean McInnis. “Oliver Ames is a tremendous team and I definitely don’t want to see them again [down the road].” Through four quarters, OA and KP took each …
