Coach Artz Breaks Down Super Bowl

Oliver Ames football coach Jim Artz takes a look at Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

While Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are gearing up for Super Bowl XLVI against the New York Giants, Oliver Ames High School head football coach Jim Artz is coming off a Super Bowl appearance of his own. Last fall, Artz led the Tigers to their first league championship since 1968 and the program's first ever appearance in an MIAA Super Bowl. While he is waiting to begin his 7th year at the helm for OA, we asked him to break down this year's NFL Super Bowl. Here are Coach Artz's five keys to the game: Key No. 1: Rob Gronkowski. The health of Gronkowski will greatly alter the Patriots' game plan. If healthy and ready to go, it creates many matchup problems for the giants. The Patriots do a great job in their no huddle high …

OA Football Haunted by Turnovers in Superbowl Loss to Concord-Carlisle

Tigers commit four turnovers in 42-9 loss to Concord-Carlisle during the Division 3 Eastern Mass Championships Saturday at Gillette Stadium.

In one play, all of the momentum shifted towards Concord-Carlisle’s direction. Following a botched punt return by Oliver Ames – after forcing C-C to a three-and-out on its opening offensive possession – the Patriots took over with a second chance and great field possession. Three plays later, senior running back George Craan (18 carries, 122 yards) scored his first of three touchdowns from four yards out to give his team a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The quick touchdown helped the sixth ranked C-C football team cruise to a 42-9 victory in the Eastern Massachusetts Division 3 Super Bowl Saturday morning at Gillette Stadium. “That gave us a lot of momentum,” Craan said about the Patriots’ start. “Our guys stayed focused. Everyone …

SUPERBOWL OR BUST

OA Football Beats Pembroke Tuesday night, 20-12 to Advance to the Div. 3 Superbowl on Saturday

Trailing Pembroke 6-0 at halftime of the Division 3 Eastern Massachusetts semifinals Tuesday night at Franklin High School, Oliver Ames football coach Jim Artz knew his team still had a chance to win. Ultimately the Tigers, who were playing in the state playoffs for the first time in school history, got the last laugh and turned a halftime deficit into a 20-12 victory. OA faces Concord-Carlisle in the EMass Division 3 title game Saturday morning. Kickoff is at 9 a.m. at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. “I said guys ‘it’s a 6-0 game and we played pretty badly, but it’s only 6-0’,” Artz said about the halftime message to his team. “If we come out and do the things we are capable of we’ll win this game. So I told them we needed to calm down …

OA Football To Clash in Playoff Battle with Pembroke Tonight

With both programs turning a corner this year, Pembroke and Oliver Ames may not be that different after-all.

At first glance, the two football programs pitted against each other tonight for the Div. 3 football playoffs at Franklin High School are worlds apart. A storied program vs. the new kids on the block. Pembroke High School was formed when it split from Silver Lake Regional High School in 2005. At 10-0, this is the first year the football program has ever had a winning season. In fact, varsity Titan football has only existed for five seasons. Oliver Ames High School spent a recent evening inducting two undefeated football teams from the 1960s into an Athletic Hall of Fame that is filled with accomplished athletes, coaches and contributors to Tiger programs. The school boasts a football stadium named after a coach that won six Hockomock …

OA Football Wins Davenport Title with Decisive Thanksgiving Win Over Sharon

After a 42-year drought between league titles, the Tigers brought it home with a 34-8 victory over Sharon on Thanksgiving

After its loss to Canton two weeks ago, very few thought that the Oliver Ames football team would be in position to capture the Davenport Division crown heading into Stoughton the very next week. But when the Tigers came away with the upset, they took control of their own destiny in their 42nd all-time Thanksgiving Day matchup with Sharon. On Thursday, OA capitalized on its opportunities and earned the Small Hock crown – snapping a 42-year drought between league titles – in a 34-8 victory at Sharon high school. “We gave ourselves no wiggle room after the loss to Canton and knew we had to win two in a row to clinch the Davenport,” said OA coach Jim Artz. “We knew what we had to do going in [against Stoughton last week] and we came through…

First Half Turnovers Cost OA Football in Loss to Canton

Tigers now face a must win against Stoughton following 27-21 loss to Canton.

From the opening kickoff, the Canton High School football team was just one step faster than Oliver Ames Friday night at Muscato Stadium. Thanks to senior quarterback Anthony Bires’ three-touchdown night (two rushing, one passing) a relentless running game featuring Dexter Green and Elias Camacho and an opportunistic defense that forced three turnovers, the Bulldogs put a dent in the Tigers’ Davenport Division hopes with their 27-21 victory and earned their first Hockomock League win of 2011. “I think we have just turned a corner,” said first year Canton coach Dave Bohane, whose team improved to 3-5 on the season (1-5 Hock, 1-2 Davenport). “Our offense is kind of syncing in a little bit with a first year staff and it showed tonight.” …

Sloppy Play Hurts OA Football in Loss to North Attleboro

Tigers have now dropped two straight following Friday's loss

From the opening kickoff, there seemed to be a lack of execution with the Oliver Ames football team in its 27-12 loss to North Attleboro Friday night at Muscato Stadium. Whether it was shooting themselves in the foot offensively (despite 164 yards from running back Sam Langston), or giving up big runs against the "Power-I" formation defensively, the Tigers were outperformed by the Red Rocketeers. “We didn’t come out to play,” OA head coach Jim Artz said. “As coaches we need to figure out what’s going on and the players need to look in the mirror and say ‘what’s going on?’” This is not to say OA had its chances to keep things close. But, even with another fine game from Langston, the Tigers squandered several opportunities with good field …

OA Football Looks to Shock League Power Mansfield Friday night

After crucial win last Friday over Foxborough, the Tigers take their show on the road looking for an upset at Mansfield this Friday.

Fresh off a key Davenport Division win over Foxborough, the Oliver Ames football team (4-1 overall, 2-1 Hockomock League, 1-0 Davenport) faces a more difficult task Friday night when it hits the road to face perennial league power Mansfield (5-1, 3-1, 2-0 Kelley-Rex) at 7 p.m. The game will be covered by Easton Patch live via Cover It Live. You can also check all the live action from the rest of the Hockomock League. Mansfield, coached by Mike Redding (24th season), is coming off a 28-7 victory over large Hock foe Attleboro last week for its third straight victory. Running back Greg Donahue rushed for three touchdowns, while defensive back Craig Mallett returned an interception 102 yards for a pick-6 in the fourth quarter to seal the …

OA Football Secures Important Davenport Win Over Foxborough [Video]

On a rainy Friday night, OA knock off defending Davenport champs behind strong support at Muscato Stadium.

It’s no secret that Oliver Ames was looking to make a statement in its pivotal Davenport Division matchup with Foxborough. When it mattered most, OA, behind two touchdown runs from quarterback Jared Schneider, 156 yards rushing from running back Sam Langston (on 20 carries) and two first quarter takeaways from Dean Soucie (a fumble recovery and a blocked punt), made that huge statement in its 17-9 victory Friday night at Muscato Stadium. “It’s huge,” head coach Jim Artz said. “They [Foxborough] are the [defending Davenport] champs and they were the champs until someone beat them. And now we’ve got that under our belt.” Getting a huge win behind strong community, support – despite the rainy conditions – was even more special for Artz and …

OA Football Weathers Rainy Conditions in Win Over Franklin Panthers, Go to 3-0

Tigers improve to 3-0 after a 28-11 victory Friday night at Muscato Stadium

As the old saying goes: a win is a win. In rainy conditions Friday night at Muscato Stadium, the Oliver Ames football team, despite making some mistakes, passed its first test of the season in a 28-11 victory. The Tigers, who defeated Franklin for the first time since 2002, improve to 3-0 heading into their first bye week of the season, while the Panthers dropped to 1-2. Although pleased with the victory, OA coach Jim Artz knows his team still needs to improve on a few things. “It’s good, but it’s not where we need to be,” he said about Friday’s win. “But having said that, I’m happy, but I still think we’re a better football team. And we know we can improve.” Improving little by little seems to be the theme in the early going for OA. In …
